A New Summer Encounter with Shigeru Mizuki's Yokai

"Starry Sky Summer Festival" has been held annually since 2023, captivating audiences who enjoy the summer festival atmosphere inside the cool dome space. This year, the event takes a bold new direction: the theme is Shigeru Mizuki's yokai.

Shigeru Mizuki's yokai — from GeGeGe no Kitaro and beyond — are familiar figures to many in Japan. Somewhere humorous, somehow endearing, these characters have a way of making the distance between humans and yokai feel remarkably small. This summer, they are unleashed across the entire planetarium dome. The 360-degree starry sky overhead gradually transforms into a world inhabited by yokai, creating an immersive entertainment experience unlike anything before.

All 88 Constellations Become Yokai — A Fantastical Experience Only a Planetarium Can Offer

There are 88 constellations in the night sky, and under normal circumstances it is impossible to see all of them in a single evening. Seeing all of them at once is something only a planetarium makes possible.

This summer, every one of those 88 constellations transforms into a yokai from Shigeru Mizuki's world.

All 88 constellations transformed into yokai constellations

Familiar constellations become "yokai constellations" — a little eerie, a little lovable. And looking around the 360-degree dome, there are more yokai lurking beyond the constellation figures. Look up and one might be looming directly overhead, waiting to give you a surprise.

Try spotting each yokai and taking a photo together. The boundary between reality and fantasy blurs in this special experience available only this summer.

Shigeru Mizuki's Yokai Meets the Planetarium — An "Uncanny World"

Shigeru Mizuki spent a lifetime depicting yokai from Japan and around the world, and his universe continues to captivate audiences today. This event brings together Shigeru Mizuki's world of yokai and the unique space of the planetarium — an unprecedented combination.

From "a place to see the stars" to "an uncanny world" — a new form of summer entertainment from Konica Minolta Planetaria Tokyo.
