Audiovisual Installation "Luminous Field" Opens at Miraie Nagaoka in Niigata for VideoListening2026, November 14 to 23

An audiovisual installation, "Luminous Field," is coming to Nagaoka City in Niigata Prefecture. Planned by media artist Shinichi Yamamoto (山本信一), a professor in the Department of Design at Nagaoka Institute of Design, it is the 2026 edition of the digital art project VideoListening, presented by Nagaoka City and Nagaoka Institute of Design. The installation runs from Saturday, November 14 to Monday, November 23, 2026 (national holiday) in the basement multi-space of the exchange facility 米百俵プレイス ミライエ長岡 (Kome Hyappyo Place Miraie Nagaoka), which opens in front of Nagaoka Station. Admission is free.

What Is VideoListening?

VideoListening is a digital art project that media artist Shinichi Yamamoto has been running together with Nagaoka City since 2024.

  • First edition (2024): A festival of motion graphics independently gathered from Japan and abroad, along with a talk session and an exhibition of works with Kazuhiro Goshima (五島一浩), who has won awards at the Japan Media Arts Festival of the Agency for Cultural Affairs, and Ryu Furusawa (古澤龍), who received an Honorary Mention at Ars Electronica 2024.
  • Second edition (2025): A 22-meter-long outdoor video installation set in the woods of Nagaoka Institute of Design, plus an exhibition of media art works by Nagaoka Institute of Design students in the central area of Nagaoka City.
  • Third edition (2026): The venue moves to the multi-space in the basement of Kome Hyappyo Place Miraie Nagaoka, where Shinichi Yamamoto and Tetsuji Ohno (大野哲二) present "Luminous Field."

Luminous Field

"Luminous Field" is an audiovisual installation made up of 55 LED displays and parallel audio from 16 speakers. Scattered lights and sounds respond to one another and create an ambient space. Light and sound resonate across distance and position while changing continuously, and a field of light and sound spreads through the entire underground space, which measures 19 m by 14 m with a ceiling height of 3.5 m and is also used as a live venue.

Artists

Shinichi Yamamoto (山本信一)

Media artist and professor in the Department of Design, Faculty of Design, Nagaoka Institute of Design.

Yamamoto has worked on video art as media art since the 1990s and took part in Fujiko Nakaya's video gallery SCAN and in Image Forum. Works have been shown in Japan and abroad with the approach of "video as an extension of electric music," which differs from the methods of film. Yamamoto took part in MUTEK Montreal Festival EM15 in 2014 and has collaborated continuously with MUTEK.JP since 2017. "新宿東口の猫" (Shinjuku Higashiguchi no Neko), planned by Yamamoto in 2021, won 17 awards in both advertising and art, including the ADC Award and the Social Impact Award at the Japan Media Arts Festival of the Agency for Cultural Affairs.

Tetsuji Ohno (大野哲二)

Sound and visual artist (Tokyo).

After a career as a DJ, mainly in Tokyo, from the mid-1990s, Ohno began producing music. In 2013 Ohno introduced "triggering," an A/V project built with visual programming. His sound, which has passed through house, techno, noise and electronica, is synchronized with visuals based on intuitive generative design and color patterns. Ohno has appeared at art festivals in Japan and abroad, including MUTEK, Scopitone, L.E.V. and Sónar.

Kyoka

Composer, producer and sound artist (Zurich).

Kyoka is a Japanese electronic artist based in Zurich. She was the first woman to join the important German label raster-noton, founded by Alva Noto, Byetone and Frank Bretschneider, as a solo artist. She has appeared at the Warehouse Project curated by Aphex Twin, CTM Festival Berlin, Sónar, Centre Pompidou and several editions of MUTEK. In recent years she has worked on projects themed on spatial perception, biological information and the bodily experience of sound.

伊達伯欣

Musician and physician.

Born in São Paulo in 1977 and raised in Narita after returning to Japan, 伊達伯欣 moved from jazz and post-rock to composing music that combines acoustic instruments and electronics, blending Brazilian warmth with the Japanese sense of wabi-sabi. Twenty-five full albums have been released worldwide with units such as Opitope, ILLUHA and Melodia. The production of the Ryuichi Sakamoto memorial album "Micro Ambient Music" earned the 2023 German Music Critics' Award (ドイツ音楽評論家賞). In recent years the artist has created a program that automatically generates just-intonation music and visuals, the first of its kind in the world.
