Starting June 10 (Wednesday), Yokohama Takashimaya's 1F Seasonal Goods section will expand to showcase around 1,200 sun/rain dual-use umbrellas, scaling up ahead of peak demand season.
With the Kanto-Koshin region entering the rainy season at roughly the same time as the historical average, summer is expected to arrive in full force once the rains clear. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the domestic average temperature from June to August last year surpassed the mean recorded since 1898, making it the hottest summer on record. Against this backdrop, the sun umbrella has evolved well beyond simple UV protection — it is now considered an essential lifestyle item for heat stroke prevention and fatigue reduction, and is embraced by people of all ages and genders.
Sales at the Yokohama Takashimaya sun/rain umbrella section — which ranks among the top performers nationally in both sales and selection — have been growing year on year, in part because more men are now open to carrying a sun umbrella.
This season, the floor is being reinforced around three key points.
Men's Sun Umbrellas: Trending Colors Include White and Pale Blue
As extreme heat and heat stroke risks have intensified in recent years, sun umbrellas are drawing attention not just for UV protection but as everyday heat-management tools. Use by men during commutes, sales calls, and outdoor movement is on the rise, and the lineup has been expanded to include items with simple designs, strong heat-shielding performance, and good portability — ideal for first-time users.
Current trend colors are whites, pale blues, and silvers — tones that look cool and complement the face.

[Blao] Ultra-Strong Heat Shield Summer Shield® / Sun/Rain Dual-Use Umbrella (Light Gray) — ¥18,700
This line debuted last year using fabric with the highest heat-shielding performance in the series. This year it expands to include solid colors and two-tone combinations for a unisex lineup, available in larger 60 cm canopy sizes that provide wide coverage and are easy to use alongside children.

[Innovator] Radicool Sun/Rain Dual-Use Umbrella — ¥7,040 (New)
A new umbrella using the attention-grabbing material "Radicool." Leveraging radiative cooling technology, it reflects incoming heat while efficiently dissipating it, delivering strong heat-shielding effect. Recommended for outdoor activities that involve extended time in the sun.

[Fuwacool® THERMO] Sun/Rain Dual-Use Umbrella (New, scheduled July launch)
The coolest model yet from the Fuwacool line, developed with advisory input from Dr. Arata Tomori, a physician known for focusing on photo-aging and heat-aging. Using a special titanium-blend fabric with a five-layer structure, it achieves a heat-shielding rate of 65% or more, 100% light-shielding, 99.9% infrared blocking, 100% UV blocking, and UPF 50+. This is also the brand's first unisex design for a sun/rain umbrella. (Image is for illustrative purposes.)
High-Functionality and Fashion-Forward Styles: Great as a Second Umbrella
Sun umbrellas are now a summer staple, and carrying multiple umbrellas tailored to different scenes is a growing trend. The range includes options that pair high-performance materials with designs that complement a variety of fashion styles.

The umbrellas feature illustrations of Yokohama's cityscape as an accent and come in three cool colors. Embroidered and lace-trimmed designs are also available.

[Traditional Weatherwear] LIGHT WEIGHT UMBRELLA — ¥11,000
A sun/rain dual-use umbrella that is light enough to carry without burden, yet uses a combination of carbon and aluminum ribs for high strength. Its simple, stylish design — characteristic of a fashion brand — has earned a strong following.
Try Umbrellas Indoors with the Heat-Shield Experience Machine
To let visitors find the umbrella that suits them best, a "heat-shield experience machine" will be installed in the section for a limited period. Even on rainy days, shoppers can experience the umbrella's heat-shielding performance without relying on the weather.
