Participating Temples

■Enryakuji Temple on Mount Hiei

Enryakuji Temple on Mount Hiei is revered as a temple that prays for world peace and as a training ground for learning and spiritual practice that has produced many founders and high priests of various Buddhist sects in Japan. It is honored as the mother mountain of Japanese Buddhism. Mount Hiei also offers spectacular views, overlooking Lake Biwa, known as the "Tendai Yakushi's Pond," to the east, and the ancient capital of Kyoto to the west. In 1994, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

■Saikyoji Temple on Mount Kaiko

Saikyoji Temple on Mount Kaiko is the head temple of the Tendai Shinsei sect. It is said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku for his mentors, Korean monks Hyeja and Hyechong. After a long period of decline, it was revived as a Tendai temple in the Heian period by the Great Teacher Jie Ryogen (Gansan Daishi). Subsequently, the monk Genshin also entered the temple, and it gradually prospered. In 1486 during the Muromachi period, the monk Shinpei entered the temple and established it as a hall for continuous nembutsu practice. During the burning of Mount Hiei, the temple was also destroyed, but Akechi Mitsuhide worked to restore it. The grounds contain the graves of the Akechi Mitsuhide clan, and related artifacts remain to this day.

■Matsuo Kannonji Temple on Mount Ryuuchi

Matsuo Kannonji Temple on Mount Ryuuchi was founded approximately 1,300 years ago in the early Nara period (712 CE). It is said that when the renowned monk Gyoki of that time visited Ise Grand Shrine, he learned of a pond on Mount Matsuo where male and female dragons were said to reside. He carved a statue of Kannon (Avalokitesvara) himself and established the temple by the pond. It is the third sacred site of the Ise Western Country 33 Kannon Pilgrimage.
