About “Ninja”

What is a Ninja?
A ninja is a specialized warrior mainly engaged in espionage, sabotage, and assassination.
The term “ninja” became widely popular during the Showa era, but historically, they were known as “Shinobi,” “Rappa,” or “Suppa.” Particularly famous ninja groups were formed in Iga (present-day Mie Prefecture) and Koga (present-day Shiga Prefecture), and they were employed by many warlords during the Sengoku period, playing crucial strategic roles.
Ninjas prioritized avoiding combat, gathering information, and ensuring their survival. Their activities were highly secretive, and they were known for possessing extremely high levels of skill and knowledge.
Ninja Weapons and Tools
The tools and weapons used by ninjas were incredibly diverse. The most well-known is the shuriken, a small and lightweight throwing weapon. Other tools include:
- Kunai (double-edged knife)
- Makibishi (spiked caltrops used to injure enemies’ feet)
- Ninto (short, straight sword)
Ninjas are Popular Overseas

Ninjas are internationally popular through movies and anime. Movies like “Enter the Ninja” and the anime “NARUTO” have spread their appeal. The mysterious and acrobatic image of ninjas fascinates many people.
