About “Jozankei Onsen” in Hokkaido (Sapporo)
Overview and History of “Jozankei Onsen”
“Jozankei Onsen” is a famous hot spring area located in Minami-ku, Sapporo, Hokkaido. It is conveniently accessible, being about a 60-minute drive from the center of Sapporo. Surrounded by beautiful nature, this hot spring area is affectionately known as the “back parlor of Sapporo” and is beloved by many tourists.
The history of “Jozankei Onsen” begins in 1866 when the ascetic monk “Mizumi Jozan” discovered the hot spring.
The hot spring town is formed along the “Toyohira River” and “Shiroi River,” and numerous ryokan (traditional Japanese inns) and hotels continue to welcome tourists. “Jozankei Onsen” is cherished by visitors from all over the country, not just Sapporo citizens, for its rich nature and the allure of its hot springs.
Attractions and Characteristics of “Jozankei Onsen”
The greatest attraction of “Jozankei Onsen” is its water quality and benefits. The hot spring features sodium chloride springs (neutral hypotonic high-temperature springs) that are colorless and transparent with a mildly salty taste. This type of spring is very popular in Japan, warming the body from the core and providing a lasting heat retention effect by preventing sweat evaporation due to the salt adhering to the skin.
There are 56 hot spring sources, most of which are concentrated around the “Tsukimi Bridge” and “Takayama Bridge” areas of the “Toyohira River.” With a generous flow rate of 8,600 liters per minute and high temperatures ranging from 60 to 80 degrees Celsius, visitors can always enjoy fresh hot springs.
The hot spring town is dotted with free footbaths and hand baths, allowing visitors to enjoy the hot springs casually. The “Ontama-no-Yu” where you can make hot spring eggs is also popular.
“Jozankei Onsen” is also deeply connected with the “Kappa Legend,” and many whimsical kappa statues are placed throughout the hot spring town. In autumn, the beautiful autumn leaves paint the valley in vibrant colors, creating a stunning view. The view from the “Futami Suspension Bridge” is particularly spectacular and attracts many tourists.
