Shiseido Parlour's BAR S to Serve Exhibition-Inspired Cocktails for "Artists Gather in Cafés" at Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum

Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum (Marunouchi, Tokyo) will host "Artists Gather in Cafés: From Impressionists to Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Picasso" from June 13 to September 23, 2026. As part of the exhibition, Shiseido Parlour's BAR S in Ginza will offer limited-edition collaboration cocktails inspired by the show throughout the exhibition period.

In the latter half of the 19th century, painters, writers, and critics gathered in Parisian cafés to exchange ideas and spark new creative movements. "Artists Gather in Cafés" takes a broad view of what "café" meant in that era — encompassing cabarets and dance halls as well — and explores how artists from the Impressionists to Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Picasso were inspired by these social spaces and the works they created there.

The collaboration with BAR S brings that world to life in Ginza, offering two cocktails themed around the nights of late 19th-century Paris to complement the exhibition experience.

A cover charge of ¥1,000 per person (tax included) applies at BAR S.

Collaboration Cocktails

Two cocktails will be offered in rotating periods during the exhibition run.

"La Nuit" — ¥2,300 (tax included)

Available: June 13, 2026 (Saturday) to July 31, 2026 (Friday)

Themed around the nights of late 19th-century Paris, this cocktail captures the ambiance of the streets where artists gathered after dark in a single glass.

"Madeleine" — ¥2,500 (tax included)

Available: August 1, 2026 (Saturday) to September 19, 2026 (Saturday)

Inspired by Ramon Casas's painting Madeleine, this cocktail draws on absinthe — a drink beloved by late 19th-century Parisian artists. In keeping with the traditional serving style, the glass is placed on a saucer. A sugar cube on a spoon is soaked in absinthe, inviting guests to enjoy the spirit's aroma as part of the experience.

In late 19th-century Paris, Manet and the artists who would come to be known as Impressionists gathered in cafés to discuss and debate. If today's cafés are places of relaxation, the cafés, cabarets, and dance halls of that era were spaces of social exchange where art was born — a new era in which art mingled with the public, moving away from the formal Salon system.

In 1897, Catalan painter Ramon Casas, drawing inspiration from Montmartre's famous "Chat Noir (Black Cat)," opened "Quatre Gats (Four Cats)" in Barcelona. The young Picasso was among its regulars. Through his time there, Picasso was deeply influenced by the pleasures and solitudes depicted in café scenes by Toulouse-Lautrec and Casas — an influence that led him toward his "Blue Period."

The exhibition presents approximately 130 works — including masterpieces by the Impressionists, Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Picasso, along with Casas's celebrated Madeleine from Barcelona — tracing the breadth of art that emerged from the café.
