About the Exhibition
J.M.W. Turner is widely regarded as the greatest painter in the history of British art.
Turner opened new frontiers in painting, capturing the shifting qualities of light, atmosphere, and the natural world — sometimes with vivid precision, sometimes through abstraction. His work has long been celebrated for giving viewers a direct experience of the "sublime" in nature. This long-awaited retrospective brings together more than 80 oil paintings, watercolors, and other works from Tate in London, home to the world's largest Turner collection.
The exhibition regroups Turner's work by theme rather than strict chronology, while loosely following a timeline within each section. It also places Turner's paintings in dialogue with contemporary art, drawing out how the questions he grappled with continue to resonate with later generations of artists.
Joseph Mallord William Turner
Known as the "painter of light" and a leading figure of British Romanticism, Turner began to distinguish himself as a painter in his teens and became a full member of the Royal Academy — Britain's foremost art institution — at just 26 years old. Reserved and principled by nature, he devoted himself to painting throughout his life. His acute sensitivity to the natural world and experimental approach to painting transformed landscape art, and he is often credited as a forerunner to the Impressionists, including Monet, who came after him.

Admission is free for visitors of junior high school age and younger, and for visitors with a disability certificate plus one accompanying companion (please present ID confirming age, a disability certificate, or similar documentation at entry).
University and high school students must present a student ID at entry. From Wednesday, November 4 to Thursday, November 19, 2026, high school and university students may enter free of charge and do not need to purchase a ticket — just bring a student ID to the ticket counter at the National Museum of Western Art.
Visitors aged 65 and older can purchase a general ticket for ¥400 off at the museum's ticket counter, with ID, between Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, November 8, 2026.
Students and faculty at institutions in the National Art Museums Campus Members program can view the exhibition for ¥1,300 (students) or ¥2,200 (faculty) by presenting a student or faculty ID at the ticket counter on the day of their visit.
Your ticket for this exhibition also grants same-day admission to the museum's permanent collection, valid only on the day of your visit. Note that the permanent collection galleries will be closed from Tuesday, January 12 to Sunday, February 21, 2027.
