Aster Hiroshima Hassaku Chuhai Returns in a New Package for a Limited-Time Release on March 3, 2026

The Aster series chuhai lineup is expanding with a refreshed release of its popular "Hiroshima Hassaku Chuhai," set to go on sale in limited quantities from Tuesday, March 3, 2026. The drink features straight-pressed hassaku citrus juice sourced from Hiroshima Prefecture, the birthplace of the hassaku fruit.

This return release comes with a revamped package design, part of a broader design refresh rolled out across the Aster series from August 2025. The contents remain the same as the 2024 version — a juicy yet crisp chuhai made from season-harvested straight juice, with an elegant balance of sweetness and mild bitterness.

What's New in the Package Design

Flavor characteristics now featured on the can

Phrases such as "moist and refreshing bitterness," "originated on Innoshima," "subtle bitterness," and "each drop is a jewel of juice" have been incorporated directly into the design, giving the product a more expressive look before you even open it.

Larger, more vivid hassaku illustration

The hassaku illustration at the top center of the can has been enlarged and made more realistic. The design is complemented by a cool blue palette evoking the Seto Inland Sea, suited to warm-weather enjoyment.

Straight juice callout added at the top

A banner-style label at the top of the can immediately highlights that the drink uses straight juice squeezed at peak ripeness — the product's key selling point.

Gold lid for a premium feel

The lid has been changed from silver to gold, lending the product a more premium appearance suitable for gifting or special occasions.

Origin story and flavor notes on the back

The back of the can now includes details about hassaku's origins in Innoshima, Onomichi, Hiroshima, along with tasting notes — designed to add enjoyment both when choosing and after purchasing.

About the Hassaku and Its Hiroshima Roots

Hiroshima hassaku citrus

Hassaku (八朔) is a Japanese citrus variety said to have been discovered during the Edo period at Jodoji temple on Innoshima in Onomichi, Hiroshima. Its name comes from the old lunar calendar date "Hassaku" (August 1st), the time of year when the fruit was traditionally eaten.

While Wakayama Prefecture holds the top spot for hassaku production in Japan, Hiroshima ranks second. Grown under the mild Seto Inland Sea climate with abundant sunshine and clean water, hassaku from the region is known for its well-balanced blend of acidity, sweetness, and bitterness. Although production has been declining nationally due to the fruit's thick, difficult-to-peel skin, its flavor remains widely popular, and hassaku-based products continue to sell strongly. The fruit holds a particularly special place in Hiroshima's local food culture.
