The Story

On Christmas Eve, spirits of Christmas appear before Scrooge, an old man who lives with his heart closed to others. Guided by the spirits, Scrooge comes face to face with his past, present and future selves. In Dickens' original novel, the story unfolds as follows.

  • The ghost of his late business partner, Marley, appears and tells him that three spirits will visit him.
  • The Ghost of Christmas Past shows him his boyhood, left alone at boarding school, and his younger self, left by his former fiancée, Belle.
  • The Ghost of Christmas Present shows him the family dinner table of his clerk, Bob Cratchit, and the party hosted by his nephew, Fred.
  • The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come shows him his own end, mourned by no one, and his name carved on a gravestone.
  • On waking on Christmas morning, Scrooge learns that the future can still be changed and regains the joy of giving to others.

If his life were to end as it is, would he be satisfied with only a bundle of banknotes going into his coffin? Moving from a life lived only for himself to a life of giving to others is the theme of this work. The ballet version uses no spoken lines and tells the story through dance alone. Scrooge stays in the guise of an old man, yet leaps high and spins sharply.

About the Production

Dickens' classic "A Christmas Carol" is presented as a full-length ballet without dialogue. Ivan Vasiliev (イワン・ワシリーエフ) is responsible for the direction and choreography and also dances the lead role. It is the first full-length ballet that Vasiliev has created as a choreographer, and it is part of the official repertoire of the Mikhailovsky Theatre (ミハイロフスキー劇場). For the Japan premiere, the production has been renewed and will be performed together with video art on state-of-the-art LED screens. The running time is approximately 1 hour 50 minutes, including an intermission.
