Dazaifu Plum Cider Returns for an 11th Year, Made From Freshly Harvested Local Plums

Dazaifu City and Nishi-Nippon Railroad (Nishitetsu) are marking the 11th year of "Dazaifu Plum Cider," with a new batch on sale from Wednesday, August 19, 2026. The drink is part of an ongoing collaboration between the city and the railway operator aimed at revitalizing the towns along Nishitetsu's lines and boosting their appeal.

The cider traces its ingredients to Dazaifu City's "Reiwa no Miyako Dazaifu 'Plum' Project," which partners with local high schools and businesses to turn plums harvested within the city into new souvenir products. Nishitetsu has taken part since 2016, producing and selling the cider as part of its own "Ensen Project," an initiative to create value for Fukuoka and the towns along its railway lines.

The syrup used in Dazaifu Plum Cider comes from plums grown at the Dazaifu Government Office Ruins, harvested and processed by students in the Food Science Department at Fukuoka Prefectural Fukuoka Agricultural High School. Alongside its long-running stores along the approach to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, the cider is now also available at BEAMS JAPAN Dazaifu, which opened last November, and at the Hakata mizutaki restaurant Toriden. In total, 40,000 bottles will be sold across Fukuoka Prefecture.

Every year, students in the high school's plum research group work on processing the fruit into syrup and other products. Dazaifu City and Nishitetsu hope that working alongside these students will help cultivate the next generation of leaders in agriculture, contributing to the industry's growth over the long term.

Nishitetsu also donates a portion of the cider's proceeds each year through Dazaifu City's corporate hometown tax program, supporting the Plum Project.
