Unveiled at Geneva Watch Days, the new Gérald Genta Geneva Minute Repeater Golden Obsidian revives one of watchmaking's most poetic complications, elevating time into music. Following the previous Geneva Minute Repeater Black Onyx, this latest release once again demonstrates the Maison's mastery of grand complications in high watchmaking, guided by elegance and creativity.

Throughout his career, Gérald Genta became known for pushing the boundaries of watch design and complications. The minute repeater was one of the complications closest to his heart, fusing masterful technique with the emotional resonance that sound can bring. He worked closely with master watchmaker Pierre-Michel Golay, whose expertise in watchmaking was matched by a passion for opera — a combination that played a key role in perfecting the acoustic richness of the minute repeater.

The name of the "Geneva" collection comes from the city where the Maison's story began in 1969, and where its revival continues today. Carrying on the legacy of the Cabinotiers de Genève, the master craftsmen who built Geneva's watchmaking tradition, the collection embodies what Genta called "L'Esprit de Genève" (the spirit of Geneva). Every piece reflects the fusion of two defining influences.

The technical precision of the movement and the meticulous construction of the case are deeply rooted in the traditional savoir-faire of the Cabinotiers de Genève. At the same time, the sculptural silhouette, rounded proportions, and signature gadroon decoration carry an Italian artistic sensibility, bringing emotion, beauty, and joy to the watch. The result transcends watchmaking, becoming art worn on the wrist.

Amplifying the Acoustics

Rooted in a vintage geometric form yet finished with a contemporary touch, the Maison's signature cushion-shaped case balances architectural structure with sculptural softness. The result is an elegant silhouette with a fluid, sensuous impression — and it is this very case construction that truly brings the Minute Repeater Golden Obsidian to life. The smooth contours of the gadroon decoration shape the case, creating a distinctive form that reflects the collection's attention to detail and craftsmanship. The 40mm case is crafted in yellow gold 3N; prized for its excellent acoustic properties, yellow gold allows the watch to resonate with a warmer, clearer tone, making it especially well suited to minute repeaters.

Despite its limited interior space, the case's dimensions are critical to the watch's acoustic performance. The case design and thickness, developed by Matthieu Hegi, Artistic Director of La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, were carefully tuned to amplify the sound of this complication. The thin case walls and internal structure of the 9.60mm gold case are engineered to let the chime resonate clearly. In a nod to the rigorous standards Genta demanded of his minute repeaters, this sound quality was achieved through painstaking work on the case itself.

Maximizing Resonance

To maximize resonance, every element of the case is designed to eliminate unnecessary weight and resistance. The case has been thinned to just 0.6mm at its thinnest points, and the interior of the bezel and case back is hollowed out with circular drilling so that sound can travel freely. Screwing the bezel and case back directly together halves the number of screws needed, preserving the rigidity of the slim structure. The screws themselves are designed without pilot holes, so no extra mass or obstruction remains inside the case. The sapphire crystal has been thinned from the standard 1.0mm to 0.8mm, improving sound transmission. True to the spirit of Gérald Genta, this technical precision also serves an aesthetic purpose, harmonizing acoustic performance, comfort on the wrist, and understated elegance.

Alternating satin and polished finishes create a subdued play of light across the case. The polished double gadroon decoration recalls Gérald Genta's historic pieces, its contrast with the satin surfaces emphasizing the watch's slim proportions. The minute repeater's trigger is thin and tactile, following the curve of the case, while the newly designed lugs and brown calfskin strap enhance the sense of a watch that wraps naturally around the wrist.

A One-of-a-Kind Dial

Warm texture and beauty draw the eye to the Golden Obsidian dial. Formed as volcanic lava cools rapidly, golden obsidian is prized for its natural depth and shifting reflections, revealing a faint golden glow beneath its dark surface. Rare and expressive, no two stones are alike, further emphasizing the individuality of each timepiece.

"What's wonderful about an obsidian dial is that no two are ever exactly the same," says Hegi. "Obsidian is usually black with bright inclusions, so this rare blend of gold and brown brings a real sense of individuality." These warm tones harmonize with the design language of the Geneva collection, while the dial's iridescent sheen naturally echoes the yellow gold case. Curved, rounded yellow gold indexes and hands display the time with elegance. Softening the overall impression is a white transfer-printed minute track, its circular inner edge and outer contour — which follows the case's sculptural form — striking a delicate visual balance. Against the golden-brown obsidian dial, this creates a captivating illusion as light moves across the surface, shifting between round and cushion shapes. The warmth of the obsidian elevates the Geneva Minute Repeater Golden Obsidian from a precise technical achievement into a vibrant, expressive presence.

Crafting Each Chime

Developed entirely in-house at La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton by master makers Enrico Barbasini and Michel Navas, the hand-wound caliber GG-002 can be viewed in full through the open case back.

Describing their approach to GG-002, Barbasini and Navas say: "Genta believed the minute repeater should move people through sound. With GG-002, too, we pursued that same balance between mechanical excellence and beauty."

Each gong is individually cut, tuned by ear and hand, and then adjusted to its ideal vibration amplitude. Combined with black polished hammers and a traditional single-turn gong construction, this produces a clear, pure chime with exceptional resonance and volume.

Exceptional Movement Finishing

The movement is entirely hand-finished to the highest standards of haute horlogerie, featuring Côtes de Genève decoration, hand-beveled angles, and circular graining throughout. Polished gold masselottes mounted on the balance form a regulating system that is rare in its refinement among minute repeaters, combining precise adjustment with exceptional finishing. The octagonal inertia wheel pays homage to one of Genta's signature forms, while the 80-hour power reserve and bar-click winding mechanism add tactile depth to the experience of wearing this watch.
