Kyoto's summer traditions are coming to Kyoto Station Building this July with a special event called "Gion Matsuri in Kyoto Station Building." The event offers visitors a chance to experience the charm and excitement of the Gion Festival — one of Japan's most celebrated traditional festivals — right at the station.
Panel Exhibition & Lantern Decorations — An Immersive Reproduction of the Festival Procession
Period: July 7 (Tuesday) to July 31 (Friday), 2026
Location: North side of the North-South Free Passage, Kyoto Station Building
The North-South Free Passage will be transformed into a festival-like space, featuring informational panels on the history and highlights of the Gion Festival, along with miniature 山鉾 (yamaboko floats) and lanterns bearing float names displayed in procession order. New this year is a life-size visual of the 大船鉾 (Ofunaboko) wheel, which serves as a photo spot where visitors can feel like participants in the festival.
