Kaga Onsen's Summer Tradition "Yamashiro Daidengaku" Takes On a New Stage This Year

Since its debut performance in 1997, "Yamashiro Daidengaku" has been staged nearly every year as a beloved summer tradition in Kaga Onsen (aside from years when performances were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic).

The performance traces its origins to an encounter with Kyogen actor Kosuke Nomura (the eighth-generation Nomura Manzo, 1959–2004). Working together with scholars, musicians, and dancers, he revived the traditional Japanese performing art of "Dengaku" for modern audiences, creating an entirely new celebratory art form called "Daidengaku." Staged outdoors in Yamashiro Onsen, including at a special venue in front of Hattori Shrine, it has continued to captivate audiences ever since.

This year marks the 27th staging of the performance, and it comes with a complete change of format: for the first time, the show moves from an outdoor night performance to an indoor performance beginning in the early evening.

It truly is a "27th Yamashiro Daidengaku" full of firsts, featuring dynamic rhythms and dance, gorgeous costumes, and the mystical sound of the flute. Organizers are promising a new kind of excitement and are looking forward to welcoming many visitors.
