About the Hakone Three Shrines Pilgrimage
The Hakone Three Shrines pilgrimage involves visiting Hakone Shrine, Kuzuryu Shrine (which enshrines Kuzuryu Okami, the guardian deity of Lake Ashino-ko), and Hakone Mototsumiya (the inner shrine of Hakone Shrine) on Mt. Komagatake summit. By visiting these three shrines, pilgrims receive greater divine blessings from both Hakone Okami and Kuzuryu Okami.
The pilgrimage is best done at your own convenience, on a day that suits you, and with a sincere heart.
Hakone Shrine

Hakone Shrine (5.6 km from Hanaori, approximately 81 minutes on foot)
A renowned shrine revered since ancient times as the chief guardian shrine of the Kanto region, Hakone Daigongen. The shrine is worshipped as a deity of fortune, offering divine protection for success, warding off evil, fulfilling wishes, traffic safety, and matchmaking. In the first year of Tenpyo Hoji (757), the monk Mangan received a divine oracle from Hakone Okami after entering Mt. Hakone, and by imperial decree, built the shrine buildings at the current location.
Monthly Festival (Tsukinamisai): 1st and 15th of each month
Hakone Mototsumiya

Hakone Mototsumiya (3.1 km from Hanaori to Hakone Komagatake Ropeway Hakone-en Station, approximately 51 minutes on foot)
The inner shrine of Hakone Shrine, located on Mt. Komagatake summit, venerates Mt. Kamiyama (Hakone's highest peak) as its sacred mountain, serving as a spiritual site for ancient worship and mountain veneration. Within the grounds, the sacred Bajyaku Stone (horse-descent stone) features a rope marking where a deity riding a white horse is said to have descended. The hole in the stone is believed to be a hoof print from the landing, and water that collects in the hole is said never to dry up, even during droughts.
Monthly Festival (Tsukinamisai): 24th of each month
Kuzuryu Shrine Main Shrine

Kuzuryu Shrine Main Shrine (2.2 km from Hanaori, approximately 33 minutes on foot)
This shrine enshrines Kuzuryu Okami, the guardian deity of Lake Ashino-ko, anciently called "Hakone Gongen Mitarashi Pond." The enshrined deity, Kuzuryu Okami, has been worshipped by locals as "Kuzuryu-sama" and is revered as a dragon deity offering particularly strong divine blessings for business prosperity, financial protection, wish fulfillment, and matchmaking.
Monthly Festival (Tsukinamisai): 13th of each month
