Hakone Kowakien Tenyu (Location: 1297 二ノ平, Hakone-machi, Ashigarashimo-gun, Kanagawa; Manager: Keizo Shimizu), in special collaboration with 一般財団法人 民族衣裳文化普及協会 (Foundation for the Promotion of Ethnic Costume Culture) and カヌチャリゾート — Okinawa's renowned resort — is offering a summer stay experience centered on traditional Japanese culture.
Since its opening in 2017, Hakone Kowakien Tenyu has operated under the concept of "nature and Japanese hospitality," working with 一般財団法人 民族衣裳文化普及協会 through programs such as the "Kimono Experience Accommodation Plan" to carry on and promote Japanese culture. The hotel believes that what guests wear can itself be an opportunity to connect with the local culture, enriching travel memories. Surrounded by the natural scenery of Hakone, guests are invited to appreciate Japan's traditional clothing culture and reflect on the designs and beauty passed down through generations.
This summer, tying in with the "Hakone Kowakien Okinawa Haisai! Festival" planned for July 1 to August 31, 2026, the hotel is selling a "Bingata-Style Yukata Dressing Plan" over the same period so guests can experience the appeal of Okinawan culture through dress as well. Under this plan, Tenyu staff trained by 一般財団法人 民族衣裳文化普及協会 will assist with dressing, making it easy even for first-timers. As a special benefit, each guest receives one yukata (with obi sash) to take home. The yukata is an original product sold at カヌチャリゾート in Okinawa, incorporating elements of 紅型 (bingata), an Okinawan traditional craft, and is characterized by its vivid colors and tropical design. After dressing, guests can enjoy a relaxed time in the natural surroundings of Hakone, and also stroll among the registered tangible cultural properties on the Hakone Kowakien grounds — including "Soba Kihinkan" and Mikawaya Ryokan's "Mikawaya Cafe" — experiencing the character and spatial beauty of historic architecture over lunch.
