Pola Museum of Art (Hakone, Kanagawa) will hold an artist talk and workshop with the featured artist on March 21, 2026, as related events for the ongoing exhibition HIRAKU Project Vol.17 Yamadakazuki "Echoes in the Earth."

Yamadakazuki Artist Talk

The artist will discuss his encounter with mosaic, his production inspired by folk tales, and his new work themed on Hakone.

Workshop "Experience Ancient Mosaic Techniques"

Mosaic, which creates paintings by attaching stone and glass, has a long history dating back to ancient times. In ancient Greece and ancient Rome, techniques such as opus lapilli (using natural stone and colored glass/smalto) and opus tessellatum (tessera mosaic) were employed. In this workshop, with mosaic artist Yamadakazuki as instructor, you will experience ancient mosaic techniques that are simple yet profound.

Note that a separate admission ticket is required to participate in the workshop.
*Elementary school students must participate with a guardian. Small stone particles and tools such as tweezers will be used.

Yamadakazuki Biography

Born in 1995 in Kumamoto Prefecture. Studied mosaic techniques at Tokyo University of the Arts. In 2021, received the 8th Kamiyama Foundation Arts Support Program scholarship. In 2023, studied in Ravenna, Italy, as a Pola Art Foundation overseas research fellow, a city with many remains of early Christian art.

The first solo exhibition at a museum by this up-and-coming mosaic artist.
Likening the repetitive act of continuously splitting stones in mosaic production to the "kodama" (echoes) resonating through the forest by the spirits living in the mountains, the venue is composed of representative works to date and the largest new work to date featuring legends related to Hakone.
