SKIPCity Irono Kuni Visual Plaza Video Museum in Kawaguchi, Saitama will host the special exhibition "What Is Stop-Motion? — Secrets of Stop-Motion Animation" (コマ撮りってなに?展~ストップモーション・アニメーションの秘密~) from May 2 (Saturday) to September 27 (Sunday), 2026.

Highlights

The exhibition unravels the history of stop-motion animation — a technique dating back to the early days of cinema — while offering an in-depth look at the production process. Visitors can learn about the fascinating techniques and true essence of this remarkable art form through a variety of engaging displays.

Breathing Life into Each Frame

Visitors can try stop-motion animation for themselves using an iPad and a variety of materials.

Stop-motion animation hands-on experience

Special Workshop: "Clay Comes Alive! Stop-Motion Animation Experience"

A special hands-on workshop is planned, led by clay animator Yuichi Ito — the exhibition's supervisor. Participants will sculpt with clay and use an iPad to create their own stop-motion animation.
