Izu Retreat Atagawa Suiko Offers Shipwreck-Aged Wine Stay Plan for a Full-Moon Christmas Eve, Limited to 8 Groups

Izu Retreat Atagawa Suiko by Onko Chishin (伊豆リトリート 熱川粋光 by 温故知新), a hotel in Higashi-Izu Town, Shizuoka Prefecture, operated by Onko Chishin Co., Ltd., a company that produces destination hotels, is selling a stay plan in which guests compare wine aged on a shipwreck off Kawazu while seated at a counter facing the sea.

Reservations are open from Wednesday, October 21, for stays between Wednesday, December 23 and Friday, December 25, 2026, limited to 8 groups (16 guests).

Thursday, December 24 is Christmas Eve with the first full moon in 19 years. From the hotel, which looks out over Sagami Nada, guests can see the Moon Road from inside the building.

Wine Aged on a Shipwreck, Served with "Japanese Cuisine of the Sea and Time"

Three bottles of wine set against the sea

The theme of the restaurant 汐と杯 is "Japanese cuisine of the sea and time" (海と時の和食), which reflects the character and memories of Izu. Wine that has spent time in the sea is served at the counter, paired with Japanese dishes based on local flavors.

Wine being sunk onto the shipwreck

In July 2026, with the cooperation of a local dive shop, hotel staff also dove and sank wine onto a shipwreck at a depth of about 25 m off Kawazu.

In December, around Christmas, the wine is brought up and served alongside regularly aged wine of the same label. Guests can compare the aroma and taste of 3 types, 6 glasses in total.

What Is Seabed Aging?

Seabed aging is a method of aging wine by sinking it in the sea for a set period. In 2010, Champagne about 180 years old was reportedly brought up from a shipwreck in the Baltic Sea in good condition, which is said to be one of the reasons the method drew attention.

Christmas With a Moon Road Over the East Izu Sea on the First Full Moon on December 24 in 19 Years

Open-air bath overlooking the sea

With the horizon of Sagami Nada stretching beyond the clear winter air, the hotel offers a view of the Moon Road through the window of the restaurant's counter seats.

In the guest rooms, the sound of waves reaches the terrace. From the open-air bath fed directly by hot spring source water, guests can watch moonlight on the shimmering sea surface appear like a single path, and spend a relaxed Christmas with someone special.

What Is a Moon Road?

Izu Retreat Atagawa Suiko original Moon Road calendar

The path of moonlight on the surface of the sea is called a "Moon Road" (ムーンロード). It can be seen for three days, the day before the full moon, the day of, and the day after, during the hours when the full moon is in the sky.

北川温泉ムーンロード (Hokkawa Onsen Moon Road), also in Higashi-Izu Town, has been selected as one of the Nihon Hyakumeigetsu (日本百名月, Japan's 100 Famous Moons). The experience of viewing the Moon Road is also available from Izu Retreat Atagawa Suiko, which is located nearby.

How it looks depends on the weather and the moonrise, and it may not be visible.

Izu Retreat Atagawa Suiko

Approximately two and a half hours by train from Tokyo, Izu Retreat Atagawa Suiko is a 16-room small luxury hotel on a hilltop overlooking Sagami Nada in Higashi-Izu Town, Shizuoka Prefecture. Carrying forward the memory of Atagawa, which thrived as a Showa-era hot spring town, the hotel reopened in November 2025 under the concept of "nostalgic luxury."

The hotel has two of its own hot spring sources, and every room has an ocean-view open-air bath with source-fed hot spring water. A spa opened in August 2026. Dining pairs Japanese cuisine made with Izu ingredients with wine.
