Izu Retreat Atagawa Suiko by Onko Chishin (伊豆リトリート 熱川粋光 by 温故知新), located in Higashi-Izu Town, Shizuoka Prefecture, and operated by Onko Chishin Co., Ltd. — a company that produces destination hotels — opens a new spa called Ukine (浮寝) on Saturday, August 1, 2026. The spa offers all-hand treatments blending essential oils from kuromoji native to the Izu Peninsula with locally grown citrus.
A "Spa Stay Plan" that includes a spa treatment also goes on sale starting Tuesday, July 28.

The spa blends essential oils from kuromoji native to the Izu Peninsula and locally grown citrus to suit each guest's mood, offering all-hand treatments in a private space.
Six spa menu options are available, allowing guests to choose based on their purpose and available time.
Kuromoji and Citrus, Carrying the Memory of the Land
The Izu Peninsula has long been known as a production area for kuromoji. Records show that during the Meiji era, Shimoda was home to seven kuromoji distilleries, which exported their aromatic water to France as a Japanese-style perfume.
Kuromoji from the Izu Peninsula, grown under abundant sunlight, is rich in linalool, the main component that keeps hair, scalp, and skin clean, helping to condition the ground from which hair grows as well as the skin itself.
Because a pleasant scent is released when its twigs or leaves are broken, kuromoji has long been known as the "tree that heals fatigue," and is known for its calm, gentle sweetness.
Thanks to the maritime climate created by Suruga Bay and Sagami Bay, the Izu Peninsula stays warm throughout the year with a low risk of frost damage, allowing different citrus varieties to be enjoyed across every season.
The refreshing scent of citrus is said to brighten the mood, and is also expected to help promote blood circulation.

Opening Commemorative "Spa Stay Plan" on Sale for a Limited Time
To commemorate the spa's opening, a limited-time "Spa Stay Plan" goes on sale starting Tuesday, July 28, 2026.
The plan includes a 60-minute treatment, and each of two guests can choose their own preferred course, allowing companions to receive treatments together at the same time.
Guests who book during the reservation period will also receive a complimentary "carbonated head spa" — not normally included in the regular 60-minute course — as a special benefit.

Atagawa Onsen thrived as a group-travel destination during Japan's postwar economic boom of the Showa era, and today still boasts the largest number of hot spring towers per unit of land area in Japan.
Izu Retreat Atagawa Suiko holds two of its own hot spring sources and features open-air baths with source-fed hot spring water in all 16 rooms. Guests can enjoy their stay as an onsen retreat, surrendering to water rich in metasilicic acid — said to promote beautiful skin — and known as "Bijin no Yu," the beauty hot spring.

Approximately two and a half hours by train from Tokyo, Izu Retreat Atagawa Suiko is a 16-room small luxury hotel perched on a hilltop in Higashi-Izu Town, Shizuoka Prefecture, overlooking Sagami Nada. Carrying forward the memory of Atagawa as a hot spring town that thrived in the Showa era, the hotel reopened in November 2025 under the concept of "nostalgic luxury."
