Katayamazu Onsen's "Yu no Matsuri" Set for August 22–23, Featuring a Fierce Genpei Mikoshi Duel

Katayamazu Onsen, part of the Kaga Onsen-kyo hot spring region, is holding its "Katayamazu Onsen Yu no Matsuri," a festival held to commemorate the opening of the hot spring. Stalls line the venue, and the hot spring town comes alive with a lion dance, a song show, and a circle-dance competition.

Among the highlights is the powerful "Genpei Shobu Mikoshi" duel.

In this vigorous event unique to Kaga, a place associated with the Genji and Heike, young men riding atop the mikoshi — representing the Genji and Heike clans — take turns performing intense handstands in an all-out duel. The fierce, genuine competition unfolding right in front of the crowd draws big excitement from onlookers.
