Wakayama's signature summer tradition, the 58th Kishu Odori "Bundara-bushi," takes place on Saturday, August 1, 2026. Last year's festival drew around 5,000 dancers and about 65,000 spectators, and for more than half a century the event has been embraced by residents as a place where people come together — a community-driven summer festival born from the idea of creating connections between people.
With summer travel and homecoming demand on the rise, the festival is also stepping up efforts to draw visitors from both inside and outside the prefecture, offering a chance to experience a night when the entire castle town of Wakayama comes alive with dancing.
Continuing from last year, a pre-festival will also be held on Friday, July 31 at Nishinomaru Plaza within Wakayama Castle. The pre-festival shares the charm of Wakayama summers, including the traditional "Bundara-bushi" dance.
Visitors can join a circle dance open to everyone around a central yagura tower, along with popular food-truck stalls, making for two full nights of Wakayama's summer atmosphere.

The biggest draw of Kishu Odori is its "street dance," in which residents, companies, and school groups parade through the castle town in costumes of their own choosing, alongside a "circle dance" that welcomes participants of any age, gender, or nationality.
As dusk turns to night around Wakayama Castle, lively music fills the air, and the sight of around 5,000 dancers and spectators moving together as one is striking. Choreography videos are published in advance, so first-timers, international visitors, and families with children can all join in easily. Crossing generations and communities, it has become a place where people build face-to-face connections — an opportunity to restore the kind of person-to-person interaction that had grown scarce since the pandemic.

The pre-festival, which began in 2025, runs from 6:15 PM to 8:30 PM on Friday, July 31 at Nishinomaru Plaza within Wakayama Castle (food trucks operate from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM).
With rows of lanterns lit against the backdrop of Wakayama Castle, the circle dance around the yagura combines with a variety of food-truck offerings, delivering a distinctly Wakayama summer night built around dance, food, and castle-town scenery.

On both the pre-festival and main festival days, numerous food trucks and food stalls line the area around the venue, adding to the festive summer atmosphere. Beyond festival staples like shaved ice, yakisoba, and fried chicken, visitors can also enjoy Wakayama specialties and trending sweets.
