Isebe Kakimoto Shrine in Wakayama Hosts Wind Chime Festival With 200 Kishu Lacquerware Chimes This Summer

Isebe Kakimoto Shrine, located in the Hikata area of Kainan City, Wakayama Prefecture, is holding its Wind Chime Festival from Friday, July 10 through Sunday, August 16, 2026. About 200 colorful wind chimes, crafted using traditional Kishu lacquerware techniques, are displayed throughout the shrine grounds, filling the air with a cool, resonant sound whenever the wind blows.

The festival offers visitors a chance to feel closer to a summer shrine visit — enjoying the charm of Kishu lacquerware, forgetting the bustle of daily life, and being soothed by sound and breeze.

A "Path of Sound" Made From About 200 Kishu Lacquerware Wind Chimes

Around 200 wind chimes are displayed throughout the shrine grounds, and every one of them is made using the traditional craft techniques of Kishu lacquerware. As the wind passes through, overlapping tones ring out one after another, announcing the arrival of a cool summer at the shrine. Visitors are invited to experience this soothing moment for themselves.
