Higashiosaka Citizens Art Center (東大阪市民美術センター) in Higashiosaka, Osaka will hold the special exhibition "Wandering Genius Painter Kiyoshi Yamashita Exhibition" from October 30 (Friday) to December 20 (Sunday), 2026. The show looks at Kiyoshi Yamashita as an artist in his own right, rather than through the image known from films and TV dramas.
Kiyoshi Yamashita was born in Asakusa in 1922 (Taisho 11). At the age of 12, he entered Yawata Gakuen (八幡学園), a care facility in Chiba Prefecture, where his talent blossomed through torn-paper art. He developed this into his own technique of "hari-e" (paper collage). In 1940 (Showa 15), around the age of 18, he left Yawata Gakuen and began wandering around Japan. His finely detailed landscape collages made of tiny torn pieces of paper were created at his mother's home, where he returned from time to time, and at Yawata Gakuen, relying only on the memories of his travels burned into his mind.
Even after his name became known nationwide and solo exhibitions were held around the country, he kept taking on a wide range of genres, including pen drawings, watercolors, oil paintings, and ceramic painting, until his death in 1971 (Showa 46) at the age of 49.
The exhibition presents works from his early years to his later years, including the masterpiece Nagaoka Fireworks (《長岡の花火》). It introduces the painter who lived through the turbulent Showa era and left the words, "If everyone had made only beautiful fireworks instead of bombs, there surely would have been no wars."
