Kobe Kitano Nosta Launches "◯◯ no Otomo" – A New Food Companion Product Lineup

Kobe Kitano Nosta, a gourmet complex housed in the renovated former Kitano Elementary School (3-17-1 Nakayamate-dori, Chuo-ku, Kobe), has launched a new retail concept called "◯◯ no Otomo" (read as "Marumaru no Otomo," meaning "companion to ___") inside its in-house café, NOSTA CAFE.

What Is "◯◯ no Otomo"?

Product lineup overview

While Kobe Kitano Nosta has long been appreciated by tourists and local residents alike for its on-site dining experiences, many visitors have expressed interest in products they can bring home—whether for daily use or as gifts. In response, the facility launched this new in-store concept under the theme of "items that accompany everyday dining moments."

Buyers, baristas, pastry chefs, and other food-passionate staff at Kobe Kitano Nosta have handpicked products from across Japan centered on the idea of "something that pairs beautifully with something else"—a spread for morning toast, a jar of jam for afternoon tea, a pickled snack for a drink.

Concept Name: ◯◯ no Otomo

Product Lineup

The inaugural launch centers on two themes: "Companions for Bread" and "Companions for Drinks."

Companions for Bread

Minatomachi no Butter Cream series from Kagoshima

Minatomachi no Butter Cream (Kagoshima)

A series of salted butter creams inspired by the image of port-town residents spreading something onto their morning toast.

Salt Milk Butter

Shio Milk Butter – ¥648
A sweet-salty milk cream with a pleasantly grainy texture. Spread on toast for a satisfying breakfast treat.

Cacao Butter

Cacao Butter – ¥648
The same sweet-salty milk cream base as the Shio Milk Butter, with cacao powder mixed in. Pairs particularly well with pancakes and scones.

An Butter

An Butter (Red Bean Butter) – ¥864
House-made sweet red bean paste using Hokkaido azuki beans, crafted into a butter cream. A pinch of salt gives it a pleasantly addictive sweet-salty balance.

8℃ by Kimi no Fruits brand from Wakayama

8℃ by Kimi no Fruits (Wakayama)

A sweets brand from "Kimi no Fruits," a Wakayama fruit orchard. Every step of the process—from growing the fruit to processing—is carried out by hand with careful attention.

Hassaku Jam

Hassaku Jam – ¥864
The top-selling jam in the lineup. Lightly sweetened, with no harsh bitterness—just the natural mild tartness and gentle bitterness of hassaku citrus. Made with only hassaku and sugar: pulp and slow-cooked peel (120 hours) are prepared separately, then combined with juice and simmered slowly at low temperature.

Mikan Jam

Mikan Jam – ¥864
A refreshing new-texture jam with a satisfying granular feel. Low-sugar (approx. Brix 40°), made only with satsuma mandarin, sugar, and lemon juice.

Fuyu Persimmon Jam

Fuyu Persimmon Jam – ¥864
A jam that preserves the chunky texture of ripe fuyu persimmon. Made with fuyu persimmon, sugar, and lemon juice only. Low-sugar (Brix 40°), and the rich unrefined sugar complements the persimmon flavor beautifully.

Nankou Plum Jam

Nankou Plum Jam – ¥864
Fragrant with the aroma of fully ripe plums. Made with only nankou plum and sugar—lightly sweetened so the plum's natural flavor comes through clearly. A thin, smooth consistency.

Companions for Drinks

Pickles Lab Hokkaido product selection

Pickles Lab Hokkaido (Hokkaido)

Additive-free pickles handcrafted one by one using carefully selected Hokkaido ingredients and a special production method designed to preserve nutrients.

Yuzu Ume Daikon

Yuzu Ume Daikon – ¥1,069
Diced daikon radish in a refreshing citrus-forward pickle featuring naturally grown, wax-free yuzu and ume, with the added depth of kombu. A refined accompaniment suitable for serving to guests.

Spicy Garlic Zucchini

Spicy Garlic Zucchini – ¥1,069
Farm-grown zucchini diced and seasoned boldly with garlic, chili, and black pepper, then finished with a touch of balsamic vinegar. A fitting snack to pair with drinks.

Colorful Stick Pickles

Colorful Stick Pickles – ¥1,188
Stick-cut daikon (white), carrot (orange), and red and yellow bell pepper—four vivid colors that brighten any table or bento box. The naturally sweet bell pepper flavor makes them hard to put down.

Youth-Restoring Mini Tomato

Youth-Restoring Mini Tomato – ¥1,188
A grown-up tomato pickle featuring rosemary—known in Europe as the "herb of youth"—combined with the lycopene of bright red tomatoes and the benefits of vinegar. Not overly sweet.

Norte Carta brand from Akita

Norte Carta (Akita)

An Akita-based producer crafting oil marinades using traditional local ingredients and fermented seasonings. Every product incorporates shottsuru, Akita's traditional fish sauce, drawing on the region's rich fermentation culture.

Iburi Gakko and Cheese Oil Marinade

Iburi Gakko and Cheese Oil Marinade – ¥680
Akita's beloved smoked pickled daikon (iburi gakko) marinated together with cheese, seasoned with shottsuru and salt koji for added depth. The smoky aroma of iburi gakko paired with umami-rich cheese is a natural match for white wine. Dice-cut for visual appeal and satisfying texture. Suggestions: serve on bread as a canapé, stir into mashed potatoes for a textured adult-style potato salad, or toss into an everyday salad for a flavor accent.

Chunky Umami Cheese in Oil (Smoked and Nuts)

Chunky Umami Cheese in Oil (Smoked & Nuts) – ¥680
Generously sized semi-hard cheese cubes with a satisfying chew, packed with umami from shottsuru and fermented seasonings. The "Smoked & Nuts" variety pairs smoke-fragrant cheese with shottsuru-coated almonds for a rich, layered flavor. Best enjoyed alongside whisky or similar spirits.

Kobe Kitano Nosta

Kobe Kitano Nosta exterior

Kobe Kitano Nosta is set inside the renovated former Kitano Elementary School, a three-story building constructed in 1931. The structure features the wooden staircases and arched corridor ceilings characteristic of Kobe's distinctive modern architecture. Located in the Kitano Ijinkan (foreign residents' district), the school once enrolled children of foreign families living in the area. After a decline in enrollment and partial damage from the Great Hanshin Earthquake, it merged with a neighboring school and closed in 1996. Though demolition was initially planned, the building's cultural and historical value—having weathered both World War II and the earthquake—earned it preservation, and it now serves as a one-of-a-kind dining destination in the city.
