Kokuyo Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Osaka City / President: Hidekuni Kuroda) will host an experimental exhibition by its Design Center exploring new expressions of plastic, titled "RAW+ Exploring the Fluctuations of Plastic," at THE CAMPUS, Kokuyo's Tokyo Shinagawa office, from January 30 (Friday) to February 6 (Friday), 2026.
1. Background of the Exhibition
Kokuyo has handled many plastic products, from stationery to office furniture. However, the expression of these products hasn't changed significantly over the years.
With the popularization of 3D printer technology, the question arose: "Can we create richer expressions that molds couldn't achieve?" This led us to focus on "the potential expressions inherent in the material itself." By treating 3D printers not as precision manufacturing machines, but as "brushes" for handling materials, we began exploring the raw state of materials without excessive processing, and the expressions born from minimal intervention.
This exhibition introduces an ongoing experimental initiative that confronts the material itself and physical phenomena, exploring their possibilities. It also aims to create opportunities for dialogue and collaboration with companies and manufacturers who share similar interests by sharing our experimental activities using 3D printers.
2. Exhibition Concept
Plastic products are generally characterized by smooth and uniform finishes. The constraint of "molds" through injection molding has defined these expressions. 3D printer technology, which doesn't require molds, has opened new possibilities, but many initiatives have focused on how to control and precisely manage this technology at advanced levels.
We attempted the opposite approach. Rather than excessively controlling mechanical fabrication, we explored different expressions of plastic by confronting the honest movements inherent in resin characteristics—flowing, warping, dripping.
Dripping.
Pressing.
Bending.
By relinquishing control, we discovered the organic expressive possibilities that plastic can possess.
