MATAHARI COFFEE is a cafe located in Teramachi, Matsue, Shimane, offering house-roasted coffee, handmade spice curries crafted from carefully selected ingredients, and original sweets. Since opening in March 2025, the cafe has welcomed more than 11,000 groups and over 15,000 visitors in total.
Guests range from housewives and business professionals to students and seniors, with the cafe regularly hosting two- and three-generation families spending time together. MATAHARI COFFEE has grown into a place where people naturally gather and spend time in their own way.

A Place to Connect Tourism and Everyday Life near Matsue Castle
MATAHARI COFFEE has shared a vision to open a new coffee stand near Matsue Castle. The area surrounding the castle — designated a National Treasure in 2015 — is home to cultural facilities such as the Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum and historic streetscapes, and has attracted renewed attention in recent years, including serving as the backdrop of an NHK morning drama series.
The cafe believes that a coffee stand near Matsue Castle — one that serves as a recognizable stop visitors can easily drop into between sightseeing spots — would further enhance the area's appeal, convenience, and the satisfaction of those who visit.
A cup of coffee, the time spent in a welcoming space, and the conversations and encounters that arise there can enrich a visitor's overall experience. At the same time, coffee in everyday life can play an important role in making Matsue Castle not just a sightseeing destination, but a place that local residents also naturally want to visit.
Tourists could enjoy a high-quality cup of coffee while exploring the area, deepening their sense of connection to the city and extending their stay. Locals, meanwhile, could have a nearby stop woven into their daily routine — gradually shifting their relationship with the castle grounds from "a special place" to "somewhere in everyday life."
When tourists and locals share the same space, a gentle energy fills the streets, increasing the area's value as a place where people gather and linger.

A Space Where All Generations Gather
Among the wide variety of guests at MATAHARI COFFEE, there are friends catching up over conversation, individuals enjoying quiet time alone, long-married couples, three-generation families, and groups celebrating milestones such as coming-of-age ceremonies or graduations. Families with babies, parents with young children, and business travelers also stop by regularly throughout the day.
To accommodate such a diverse range of guests, the cafe offers a broad selection of house-roasted coffees from dark to light roasts, alongside spice curries, sweets, and a varied drink menu — all continually refined to suit different tastes and preferences.
MATAHARI COFFEE has gradually developed into a space where people of all generations and backgrounds can gather and spend time in their own way. The accumulation of these shared yet individual moments is, the cafe believes, what gives a neighborhood its richness.

Turning Matsue Castle into a Place to Stay

Matsue Castle holds an important place both for visitors and for those who live in the city. MATAHARI COFFEE envisions that a coffee stand in the area — one that draws tourists while remaining a familiar everyday spot for residents — could create a natural gathering point and further enrich the castle's surroundings.
The vision is for a place where history and culture can be felt, yet the atmosphere is not exclusively for tourists — somewhere locals also feel at home. Time spent over coffee, slow conversations — as these everyday moments accumulate, Matsue Castle and its surroundings could become a place cherished by an even broader range of people.
MATAHARI COFFEE's Vision for the Future
MATAHARI COFFEE sees itself as a bridge — between people, and between everyday life and the extraordinary — through coffee and the spaces it creates.
The aim is to create a scene near the foot of Matsue Castle where tourism and daily life gently intermingle, enriching the lives of those who live in Matsue and deepening the experiences of those who visit.
