A new Mothra pop-up store is coming to Miyagi Prefecture. CRAZY BUMP Co., Ltd., which plans and operates exhibitions themed around manga, anime, and tokusatsu subculture, will open the "Great Mothra POP UP STORE in TSUTAYA Rifu" at TSUTAYA Rifu on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
About Mothra
Mothra is one of Toho's best-known kaiju film franchises, both in Japan and internationally. Since its debut in 1961, it has been held in high regard by tokusatsu fans alongside the Godzilla series. Beyond being a monster movie, Mothra carries themes of environmental issues and human hubris, while its fantastical setting has made the kaiju popular across generations.
Mothra's character stands apart from typical kaiju: it acts as a guardian deity rather than a destroyer, transforms through a distinctive larva-to-cocoon-to-adult life cycle, and communicates through the twin fairies known as the Shobijin. These original traits have kept the character's appeal undimmed 65 years after its debut.
2026 marks both Mothra's 65th anniversary and the 30th anniversary of the Heisei Mothra trilogy, a milestone being called "Mothra Year." As part of the celebration, this pop-up store presents an entirely new lineup of Mothra merchandise, including apparel staples like T-shirts and caps, acrylic stands, and stationery, with many designs inspired by the vivid coloring of Mothra's wing scales.
Mothra's beauty, strength, and rich storytelling continue to win over fans today, and the pop-up store is designed to be enjoyed both by longtime fans and by newer fans who discovered the character through anime series or Hollywood films.
