One of Kansai's Finest Hydrangea Displays — Mt. Ikoma's Nukataenchi Ajisai Garden in Full Bloom from Late June

The Nukataenchi Ajisai Garden, situated on the slopes of Mt. Ikoma on the border of Higashi-Osaka City and Ikoma City, Nara, is set to reach peak bloom from late June to early July. Hundreds of colorful hydrangeas line a winding 1.5 km mountain trail, transforming the hillside into a vibrant early-summer landscape. The garden is known as one of the largest hydrangea spots in the Kansai region.

Discover the Colors of Mt. Ikoma Along the Trail

One of the highlights of the Ajisai Garden is that it is accessed via a hiking course, making it a unique destination that combines a mountain walk with the beauty of the blooms. The cool shade of the trees along the path, combined with the vivid colors of the flowers, offers a refreshing "nature and cool air" experience perfect for the summer season.

Rather than simply visiting the flowers, the journey itself — walking through the mountain scenery to reach the garden — is very much part of the appeal.

Ajisai Matsuri (Hydrangea Festival) — June 20 (Sat) to July 12 (Sun)

The Osaka Prefectural Forest Nukataenchi hosts the "Ajisai Matsuri" (Hydrangea Festival) annually during the blooming season, typically from the third Saturday of June through the second Sunday of July.

Shichidanka — a rare and legendary variety of hydrangea

Among the many varieties on display, visitors can also spot the Shichidanka, a rare cultivar said to be a "phantom hydrangea." For the latest details on the festival, visit the official Osaka Prefectural Forest website.

Cool Off with "Ikoma Kori" Shaved Ice

The area around Mt. Ikoma features the "Ikoma Kori" (いこま氷) kakigori project, where participating shops scattered from the base to the summit serve original shaved ice inspired by Mt. Ikoma. It is a great way to cool down after the hike.

Extend the Trip to Ikoma Sanjo Amusement Park

From the Ajisai Garden, it is also possible to walk to the Ikoma Sanjo Amusement Park. At an elevation of approximately 642 meters, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the Osaka Plain alongside the rides and attractions.

The Higashi-Osaka and Mt. Ikoma area, with its blend of natural scenery, seasonal flowers, hiking, and mountain views, is located about 20 minutes from central Osaka by train. It makes for an easy and rewarding day trip during the early summer season.
