Tainai-daira in Niigata Prefecture's Tainai City will once again turn its skies over to stargazers this summer, as the Tainai Star Festival returns for its 43rd edition from Friday, August 28 through Sunday, August 30, 2026. First held in 1984, the festival has grown into one of Japan's largest stargazing events, drawing around 25,000 visitors last year under conditions clear enough to see the Milky Way with the naked eye.
The festival is free to attend and open to anyone who wants to join — astronomy enthusiasts, first-time stargazers, children, and complete newcomers are all welcome.

What to Watch in the Night Sky in 2026
This year's opening day, Friday, August 28, falls on a full moon, but because the moon sits low in the sky (in Aquarius), a variety of objects along the Milky Way are still expected to be visible. After sunset, Venus (the evening star) shines in the western sky, and through a telescope its phase — past the half-illuminated stage — can also be observed. Around 9:00 PM, Saturn rises in the east, its rings now open enough to show the planet's familiar ringed silhouette.
The growing popularity of smart telescopes means that even on a full-moon night, a wide range of celestial objects can now be viewed with striking clarity. Astronomy manufacturers from Japan and abroad are also expected to unveil and exhibit their newest equipment, rounding out a festival packed with highlights. The event will be live-streamed online across three channels, so those who can't attend in person can still follow along in real time from anywhere in the country.
Festival Highlights
Highlight 1: More Than 50 Domestic and International Astronomy and Optics Exhibitors

Telescope, camera, and imaging equipment manufacturers from Japan and overseas will set up booths, with extensive hands-on displays of the latest smart telescopes. It's a chance to compare manufacturers side by side and find the right telescope for you. The festival's traditional grand auction and raffle are also accepting entries, and visitors are welcome to bring their own homemade telescopes. Editorial staff from Tenmon Guide, a Japanese astronomy magazine, will also be covering the event.

Highlight 2: Opening Night Special Stage — the "Tainai City PR Corner"
Friday, August 28, from 8:30 PM

The first night of the festival features a stage event with a lineup of special guests, hosted by Tainai City tourism ambassador and voice actress Reina Hasegawa.

- A live stage set by Niigata-based idol group courtesea
- A tourism talk segment (from 9:30 PM) covering local businesses and topics such as rice flour products
The stage will also be broadcast nationwide via YouTube Live, so those who can't make it to the venue can still watch in real time from anywhere in the country.

Highlight 4: A Nationally Known Cosplay Group Returns

A group of cosplayers active across Japan is expected to join the festival again this year. Their striking appearances set against the backdrop of the starry sky have become a major talking point among visitors every year.
