"Sakura Wars" is a steampunk work set in the fictional "太正" era, an age of advanced steam technology.
The first installment, released for the Sega Saturn on September 27, 1996, follows "帝国華撃団・花組," a group that performs on stage as the "歌劇団" in peacetime and fights using spiritual power as the "華撃団" in times of crisis, and it won the support of many players. The game received the 作品賞 at CESA大賞 '96 (now the Japan Game Awards), and the series went on to expand its stage from the imperial capital, Tokyo, to Paris and New York, continuing its journey with 『新サクラ大戦』.
