The Legend of the Moon in the Kumano Region
The Kumano region carries an old legend about the moon known as "Santaizuki," or the Three Moons.
Long ago, a mountain ascetic training in the Kumano mountains is said to have watched the moon split into three on the night of the 23rd day of the 11th month of the old lunar calendar, and to have been granted a mysterious power. Locally, the tradition of "tsukimachi" (moon-waiting) continues to this day, with people climbing the mountains on that same night each year to await the moonrise. A great tree standing at Oyunohara, the former shrine grounds of Kumano Hongu Taisha, is also said to be a place where deities once descended in the form of three moons, and the site has long drawn devotion.
With this legend in mind, SEN.RETREAT has prepared a campaign to coincide with the autumn Jugoya, giving guests a more affordable way to stay. In a natural setting with almost no artificial lighting, gazing up at the bright moon against a clear night sky is a truly special experience. Guests are invited to come and enjoy a moment of peace.

SEN.RETREAT: Lodges Scattered Along the Kumano Kodo
"SEN.RETREAT" is a series of unmanned lodges offering a "retreat experience" that resets stress amid nature. Built around the concept "RETREAT — walk, play, and rest, losing yourself in the moment," the lodges give travelers on the Kumano Kodo a place to restore mind and body and set out again with a positive outlook. The brand plans to grow to six lodges in total along the Nakahechi route, the main pilgrimage path of the Kumano Kodo, connecting the scattered properties into a single trail to support travelers along the way.
The first property, SEN.RETREAT TAKAHARA, opened in October 2021 in Takahara, a hillside settlement in Nakahechi-cho, Tanabe City, at an elevation of about 300 meters, in a renovated vacant house. It now also includes a private sauna, offering a stay that soothes the fatigue of travel.
The second property, SEN.RETREAT CHIKATSUYU, opened in April 2022 in Chikatsuyu, a settlement that has long thrived as a lodging town along the Kumano pilgrimage route. It offers rooms where guests can stay with their dogs, a private garden for barbecues, a terrace with a fire pit, and a pizza oven.
The third property, SEN.RETREAT TAKIJIRI, opened in June 2025 in Takijiri, the starting point of the Nakahechi route. Guests can enjoy a barbecue in front of the lodge while listening to a nearby stream, spending unhurried time close to nature.
The fourth property, SEN.RETREAT HONGU, opened in May 2026 in Mimiuchi, Hongu-cho, close to Kumano Hongu Taisha. Housed in a trailer house, it offers a compact yet functional space that balances comfort with life alongside nature.
