Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine in Nachikatsuura, Wakayama Prefecture, is holding its annual public viewing of the shrine's hydrangea garden (Ajisai-en) from June 3 to June 30, 2026. Set within the World Heritage Site "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range," the shrine offers a uniquely serene rainy-season landscape that visitors can enjoy free of charge.
The hydrangea season coincides with environmentally significant dates such as Environment Day (June 5) and Umbrella Day (June 11), making it a timely opportunity to appreciate Japan's rainy season scenery and reflect on the natural world.

The shrine grounds are home to approximately 3,000 hydrangea plants, including lacecap hydrangeas (gaku ajisai) and mountain hydrangeas (yama ajisai). Nestled within the World Heritage forests of Kumano and surrounded by the natural landscape of Nachi-san, the flowers are beautifully complemented by the rain, creating a quietly enchanting scene.
On Sunday, June 14, the Hydrangea Festival (Shinto ritual) will take place, during which colorful hydrangeas are offered at the shrine to pray for good health and express gratitude for the blessings of nature. As part of the ceremony, shrine maidens (miko) will perform a Kagura dance known as the "Toyoei no Mai," filling the grounds with a solemn and atmospheric mood fitting for the rainy season.
