Shiba Park Hotel Launches the "Traveling Bookshelf" — A Sustainable Book Exchange for Guests

Shiba Park Hotel, located in Minato-ku, Tokyo, has installed a new initiative called the "Traveling Bookshelf" on the second floor of the hotel in March 2026. Stocked with books left behind by guests from around the world — novels finished mid-journey and guidebooks that have served their purpose — the shelf offers a sustainable way to enjoy travel by passing books on to the next reader rather than discarding them.

The

How the Traveling Bookshelf Works

The Traveling Bookshelf is a book exchange open to all hotel guests. The concept is simple: leave one book and take one from the shelf in return. When leaving a book, guests write a short note to the next reader on a bookmark-style message card provided by the hotel, tuck it inside, and place the book on the shelf. In this way, each book carries a quiet message from its previous owner, so that both the story and the owner's thoughts continue on to the next journey.

A short note to the next guest, tucked inside the book.

Books That Cross Borders

With over 95% of Shiba Park Hotel's guests coming from overseas, the books on the shelf also travel across borders. Brought by travelers from around the world — primarily from Europe, North America, and Australia — the collection spans multiple languages and genres. On a single shelf in Tokyo, books from many places come together, then set off again somewhere new, creating a continuing cycle of travel.

Time with a book discovered on your journey.

The hotel describes the initiative as a way to bring "a small measure of richness" to both current guests and future visitors. Encounters with books and encounters with people link together, and small coincidences lead to unexpected discoveries — a gentle serendipity that the bookshelf aims to nurture.

A Library Hotel

Exterior of Shiba Park Hotel

Founded in 1948, Shiba Park Hotel has a long history as a hotel that began welcoming foreign trade missions. The hotel has positioned itself as a "Library Hotel," featuring a collection of approximately 1,500 volumes curated by Ginza Tsutaya Bookstore. The Traveling Bookshelf adds another chapter to that story — one written by guests themselves.
