Tennoji Zoo Launches Osaka Hinoki Wooden Animal House Toy With 10 Zoo Animals on October 16

Tennoji Zoo in Osaka now has its own wooden educational toy, "Doubutsu Ki no Ie Tennoji Doubutsuen" (どうぶつ木のおうち てんのうじどうぶつえん, "Animal Wooden House: Tennoji Zoo"). It was co-developed with IKONIH (アイコニー), a domestic hinoki toy brand run by Marubeni Mokuzai Co., Ltd. (丸紅木材株式会社) of Chuo Ward, Osaka. It goes on sale on Friday, October 16, 2026, at the zoo's goods shop ZOOQLE (ズークル) and the Tennoji Zoo Online Shop. ZOOQLE is operated by Kintetsu Retailing Co., Ltd. (株式会社近鉄リテーリング).

The toy is based on the house from "Aikonie Zoo" (アイコニーズー), the renewed IKONIH product, and was developed with original specifications for Tennoji Zoo. Footprints of six kinds of animals, including the snowy owl, are hidden on the roof and walls, so interest in animals can grow through play.

Ten Animals From Tennoji Zoo

The set includes 10 popular animals that actually live at Tennoji Zoo. Three of them, the red panda, the tiger and the penguin, are original designs.

The toy is made from hinoki (Japanese cypress) grown in Osaka Prefecture and from thinned wood, finished in a material that carries the warmth of wood. It is described as an eco-friendly educational toy that takes the circulation of forest resources and the use of local resources into account.

The Forest Cycle Behind the Toy

In Japan, cedar and cypress trees planted after the war have not been used enough, and many forests are not well maintained. Marubeni Mokuzai values a forest cycle of "cut, use, plant, grow" and offers furniture and toys made from domestic hinoki under the IKONIH brand.

Tennoji Zoo shares the IKONIH concept, and the two developed this product from the viewpoint of environmental conservation. The aim is to give visitors a chance to become more interested in forest resources and the environment through animals.
