THE Rihaku Residence Akama Fukuoka has pre-opened in the Akama neighborhood of Munakata City, Fukuoka Prefecture. The facility is the third property in the "THE Rihaku" lodging brand series — following "Kaze no Oyado" in Iki City, Nagasaki Prefecture, and "Mizu no Oyado" in Minamiaso Village, Kumamoto Prefecture.
A Showa-era traditional Japanese house has been renovated in a Japandi style — blending the wabi-sabi aesthetic of Japan with the warmth of Scandinavian design — and includes a tea ceremony room and bar counter, marking the first accommodation of this type in Fukuoka Prefecture.* The concept centers on an immersive single-building rental stay where guests can experience the cultural side of the inn while simultaneously tasting the everyday life of the surrounding residential neighborhood.
(First accommodation in Fukuoka Prefecture to combine a Japandi-style renovation of a traditional old house with a tea ceremony room and bar counter. As of April 1, 2026, based on the operator's own research.)

A Tea Room and Bar: Two Spaces for an Extraordinary Stay
Inside the inn, guests will find both a full-fledged tea ceremony room and a bar counter designed for long evening enjoyment.
The Tea Room: Separated from the noise of the surrounding residential area, the tea room offers a sanctuary-like space where the act of preparing tea helps settle the mind.

The Bar: As night falls over the quiet residential neighborhood, a private retreat comes to life. The bar counter features a single slab of Japanese ash (tamo) wood, prized for its flexible grain and clear, beautiful annual rings. The combination of quality drinks and this robust yet delicate wood surface creates an intimate setting for conversation about the history and culture of the area.

The Kitchen and Dining Area: Guests can cook with fresh local ingredients from the land of Munakata and seafood from the Genkai Sea. In the mornings, the aroma of single-origin coffee from Hakozaki Coffee (Fukuoka City) fills the space; in the afternoons, there is time to savor rich green tea at a leisurely pace. Everyday meals take on a special cultural dimension through the bounty of the land.

The Neighborhood Experience: Discovering Japan's Everyday Life
The Akama residential neighborhood where the inn is located has no flashy tourist attractions — but it does have the "real Japan." Step outside and you may hear children on their way to school, or catch the morning scent drifting from a nearby store. After refining your senses in the refined space of the inn, you can rediscover these ordinary scenes as one-of-a-kind content.
The aim is to transform "lodging" into a genuine "stay" — a borderless experience where guests gradually shift from being travelers to becoming, in a small way, residents of the town.

A Casual Take on Tradition — and Facilities for Long-Term Stays
THE Rihaku Residence Akama Fukuoka retains the ambiance of a genuine Japanese home while supporting a casual, modern lifestyle. The calm residential setting also makes it well suited for monthly and other long-term stays. The serene space can also be rented out for cultural activities such as tea ceremony, kimono dressing, cooking classes, workshops, and indoor events.
The Japanese-style room is equipped with a record player, allowing the soft, analog sounds of vinyl to fill the space.
The inn accepts only one group of guests per day, making it a completely private retreat. Whether as a peaceful home away from home or as an expressive space for sharpening creativity, guests can use the property as they wish.
The Living and Dining Area with Raised Platform Seating: The large living and dining area is connected to the bar counter, encouraging conversation. With an optional "Munakata Local Sake Set," guests can enjoy an evening of food and drink in style.

The Seasonal Garden and Fireplace: BBQ in the garden is available as a paid option, and firewood for the winter fireplace can also be added. Guests can enjoy rich, multi-sensory time in this hidden residential retreat.

Amenities for Long-Term Use: With high-performance appliances and a generous floor plan, the inn is suitable for workcation stays or month-long residences as a base for those considering relocation. It offers a new lifestyle proposal — blending into the daily rhythms of the town while exploring the depths of Japanese culture.

Seasonal Obanzai Cuisine (Advance Reservation Required / Paid Option)
For guests who wish to enrich their private stay with a special dining experience, the owner's mother — who has spent many years refining her culinary skills in the area — can prepare traditional "obanzai" (Kyoto-style home cooking) for breakfast and dinner upon request.
Dishes crafted from locally sourced seasonal ingredients carry a deep, refined flavor. Served at the spacious dining table or bar counter alongside local Munakata sake, each meal offers a meaningful encounter with the everyday life of Akama.
