YOKAI Immersive Experience Exhibition KAGOSHIMA, produced by Hitohata Inc. (Representative Director: Takeaki Higashiyama) and running from Friday, July 3 to Monday, August 31, 2026 at Reimeikan (Kagoshima Prefectural Center of History and Art), Special Exhibition Room 1, has surpassed 30,000 visitors, marked by a commemorative ceremony. The 30,000th visitor was a family from Kagoshima City who brought along Shigeru Mizuki's Great Illustrated Encyclopedia of Yokai, sharing their impressions afterward: "There were so many yokai."
The exhibition is the world's first immersive digital art museum where visitors can step into Japan's celebrated yokai art — including Hyakki Yagyo Emaki (Night Parade of One Hundred Demons), Hyakumonogatari (One Hundred Ghost Stories), oni (demons), tengu, kappa, and tsukumogami (spirit objects) painted by various artists during the Edo and Meiji periods — brought to life through cutting-edge video technology and three-dimensional sculpture.
Born from the rich imagination of ancient Japanese mythology and folklore, yokai have been loved by people around the world across generations. Using state-of-the-art digital technologies such as 3D CG, projection mapping, and holographic screens, the humorous figures found in yokai paintings and caricatures are brought dynamically to life, while three-dimensional sculptures recreate a realistic yokai world.
With cooperation from Nishio City Iwase Bunko, Japan's first rare book museum, and the Yokai Museum on Shodoshima, the exhibition also offers commentary on yokai culture, paintings, caricatures, and art, tracing the history of yokai and its connections to modern pop culture.
The exhibition has previously been held in Nagoya and Tokyo, drawing more than 250,000 visitors.
