The village of Akaigawa in Yoichi District, Hokkaido — a member of Japan's "Most Beautiful Villages" association — has seen its gateway rest stop, Michi no Eki Akaigawa, temporarily close its main building as of April 1, 2026. With Golden Week just around the corner and the agritourism season set to begin, the closure has dealt a significant blow to the local community.
In response, the team that spent three years running the Michi no Eki's in-house restaurant "Kitchen Maple" has taken action. On Saturday, April 25, "Mura no Akari Restaurant" will open inside the village's community facility Mura no Akari, serving a brand-new local specialty: the "Akaigawa Burger."
The Akaigawa Burger: Born from Adversity

The Akaigawa Burger (¥1,500 for the burger alone) was created with the goal of turning the negative publicity around the Michi no Eki closure into something positive — by developing a burger so compelling it helps elevate the village's brand and showcases the quality of its local produce.
Devised by a head chef with a background in Italian cuisine, the burger is designed to bring out the full potential of Akaigawa Village's agricultural products. A single bite delivers the savory depth of beef, the sweetness and acidity of fresh vegetables, and a satisfying crunch — all at a price of ¥1,500 that honestly reflects the quality of the ingredients used.
Ingredients and Local Producers

A Closure at the Worst Possible Time
Akaigawa Village's tourism season kicks off in earnest with Golden Week (early May). May brings a surge of drive-through visitors drawn to the village's magical "spring koyo" — a phenomenon where fresh spring greenery mingles with lingering autumn-toned foliage. From June onward, highlights include cloud-sea viewing at Kiroro Resort, cherry picking, and direct sales of melons, watermelons, and corn.
The Michi no Eki served as the key hub connecting visitors to these agritourism attractions and provided local farmers with a direct sales venue. Its April closure has left farmers without a vital distribution channel and visitors without the village's culinary gateway.
"Michi no Eki Akaigawa had been steadily climbing the rankings in recent years," said a staff member. "A closure at this timing will disappoint visitors and could damage the village's image."
Supporting Local Farmers
The Michi no Eki closure has also hit local farmers' sales channels directly. Mura no Akari Restaurant plans to source vegetables directly from Akaigawa producers, helping to partially fill the void left by the closed Michi no Eki. The venue also intends to stock processed goods from local farmers, creating a space that supports as many producers as possible.
The team has expressed an intention to re-hire two part-time staff members should the Michi no Eki reopen, keeping local employment opportunities in mind as they move forward.
Kitchen Maple Manager Mayu Ito's Comment

"Akaigawa Village has truly delicious and abundant produce. We haven't yet fully tapped its agricultural potential. I hope that going forward, many people with many different ideas will create burgers that are distinctly Akaigawa — burgers that could gain recognition around the world.
Centered on food and dining, we want to keep sharing the charms of Akaigawa Village and let everyone discover just how much potential this place holds."
Mura no Akari Restaurant opens on Saturday, April 25, 2026, with a grand opening at 12:00 PM. The restaurant operates from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with irregular closing days.
