Art Fair Tokyo 20 Unveils Full Program with Talk Events, Tea Ceremony, and Official Bar

aTOKYO Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Kiichi Kitajima) will host Art Fair Tokyo 20, the 20th edition of Japan's leading art fair, from March 13 to 15, 2026, at Tokyo International Forum in Marunouchi, Tokyo.

Note: "Art Fair Tokyo" is the brand name of the event operated by aTOKYO Co., Ltd. Individual editions are designated as "ART FAIR TOKYO."

Note: March 12 is for invited guests only; the dates above refer to the public opening period.

Overview

Since its inaugural edition in 2005, Art Fair Tokyo has operated as Japan's largest independent art fair, providing a platform for fair art market transactions. The 20th anniversary edition features a carefully selected roster of 141 galleries from Japan and abroad at Tokyo International Forum (3-5-1 Marunouchi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo).

This year's fair significantly expands its on-site programming, strengthens satellite venues in collaboration with Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd., introduces an official bar by Ebisu garage bar Homunculus, and welcomes The Nikkei and GQ JAPAN as lead media partners, with new media partner J-WAVE joining the lineup.

Special Exhibition by Tatsuo Miyajima in "Encounters" Section

The fair venue will feature a special exhibition by signature artist Tatsuo Miyajima in the "Encounters" section.

Tatsuo Miyajima (born 1957) gained international attention after his participation in Venice Biennale Aperto '88 following his graduation from Tokyo University of the Arts. He has established a distinguished international reputation through works employing LED digital counters to explore themes of time and the continuity and relationships of life. Exhibiting worldwide and collected by numerous museums, Miyajima is also known for his engagement with social projects such as "Time Planted - Kaki Tree Project" and "Sea of Time - TOHOKU."

Details about the exhibition will be announced on the Art Fair Tokyo 20 official website and social media.

Tea Ceremony and Special Exhibition by Japan Ceramics Association: EMBODIED - Soil, Fire, Body

As part of Art Fair Tokyo 20's related programming, the Japan Ceramics Association will host a tea ceremony booth and special exhibition titled "EMBODIED - Soil, Fire, Body."

The Japan Ceramics Association Award, established in 1954, honors ceramic artists who have pioneered new expressions in their time. This exhibition showcases works by 46 past Award recipients and 24 Encouragement Award winners.

A tea ceremony booth will allow visitors to enjoy matcha served in tea bowls crafted by award-winning artists while viewing the exhibited works. This "embodied dialogue" through tactile and gustatory senses, not just visual, offers a deeper experience of the artistic world.

Tea service is limited to 150 people per day (first-come, first-served) and costs 1,000 yen separately from the fair ticket.

A talk event with Masahiro Karasawa, Director of the National Crafts Museum, is also planned during the fair.
Talk event seating is also first-come, first-served.

Special Exhibition "Culture - Innovation" by Bonsai Artist through Maji Art Project

In the fair's access area, Maji Art Project will present "Culture - Innovation," a special exhibition by bonsai artist Naruhiro Hirao, themed around the "cycle" of culture and innovation.

Maji Art Project, initiated by Yusuke Maji, reinterprets regional material cultures such as bonsai and ceramics as human output that develops through innovative invention and cultural expansion, framing them as "Culture - Innovation."

"We believe that human progress, development, and everyday conveniences are built upon innovations of various scales, with technologies and concepts layered upon past innovations. When things become universal across countries, regions, and ethnicities, fusion with different cultures triggers the next innovation. Our project aims to observe this ecosystem where innovation and culturalization repeat through discovery and invention, visually presenting the process for future innovation." (MAP)

Lead Media Partners: The Nikkei and GQ JAPAN

Art Fair Tokyo 20 welcomes The Nikkei and GQ JAPAN as lead media partners.

The Nikkei has strengthened art scene awareness and information sensitivity in Japan through "art NIKKEI." Since last year, they have produced the "art NIKKEI Special Edition" tabloid to support information dissemination for art events including art fairs.

GQ JAPAN, a global media leading men's fashion, style, and culture, has focused on art since its September 2023 relaunch, publishing an annual art special issue. The magazine also conducts the "GQ Creativity Awards," a global GQ initiative honoring pioneers across art, fashion, and music, and has hosted the "GQ JAPAN Creative Weekend" exhibition event since 2024 showcasing award winners' works.

Both companies' participation as lead media partners will help connect Japan's art scene to broader fields.
