ART AQUARIUM MUSEUM GINZA Opens Its Final Ginza Exhibition "Ginza’s Goldfish Hundred Flowers Exhibition" on October 2

ART AQUARIUM MUSEUM GINZA (located at Ginza Mitsukoshi) will end its exhibition at Ginza Mitsukoshi on January 6, 2027. The museum then plans new developments ahead of its 20th anniversary in 2027.

To close out more than five years of its permanent exhibition in Ginza, the museum is holding its final special exhibition, "Ginza’s Goldfish Hundred Flowers Exhibition" (Ginza no Kingyo Hyakka-ten), starting October 2, 2026.

Final Ginza Special Exhibition: Ginza’s Goldfish Hundred Flowers Exhibition

Period: October 2 (Fri), 2026 – January 6 (Wed), 2027

Since opening on May 3, 2022, the museum has welcomed many visitors from Japan and abroad, presenting a unique art space with goldfish as the stars from Ginza through seasonal special exhibitions. As a thank-you to everyone who has visited and to all those who supported the museum's operation, the final season, a culmination of its Ginza exhibitions, runs from October 2 (Fri), 2026 through January 6 (Wed), 2027. Various programs offering new experiences and new collaboration projects are also planned during the period. Whether you have visited before or have yet to see it, the exhibition is a chance to enjoy the culmination of the Ginza displays.

Highlights of the Works on Display

Goldfish Rock Garden (金魚の石庭) — Created 2025

Clad in vivid green young maple leaves, this goldfish rock garden pairs a tank work expressing a mass of water likened to a stone with a bamboo installation that surrounds it like waves. Young maple leaves color the upper part, creating a space where stillness and vividness coexist.

Comment from Kengo Kuma at the time of creation

Combining the different materials of bamboo and acrylic expresses both delicacy and lightness. A spiral made of one large bamboo stalk and acrylic stands at the center, surrounded by three smaller spirals, and the spiral forms give the space fluidity and rhythm, as if responding to the graceful movements of the goldfish. The work draws out varied expressions depending on the viewing angle and changes in light. Just as the goldfish shimmer when they catch light underwater, the aim was an expression in which the space itself transforms as viewers move.

Goldfish Approach (金魚の参道) — Created 2025

A ginkgo-lined path where red spider lilies bloom. Ginkgo trees and red spider lilies color the path in autumn hues, and an approach of pillar-like tank groups made to resemble torii gates invites visitors into another world beyond.

Goldfish Corridor (金魚の回廊) — Created 2022

Wisteria, said to be a flower that wards off evil, hangs down over a corridor laid with vivid flowers. Visitors can enjoy a scene where mystical purple-toned light, flowers, and goldfish appear together. (A work produced by Hibiya Kadan.)

Cho-Oiran -Yui- (超花魁-結-) — Created 2016

A large tank surrounded by a blooming cherry blossom setting, with countless goldfish dancing gracefully inside. This beautiful interplay creates the most colorful scene in the venue, and it brings out the lingering charm of a banquet.

Shin Kingyo Hinpyo (新金魚品評) — Created 2022

An area where visitors can enjoy goldfish together with seasonal flowers, and the most popular area of Art Aquarium. During the autumn period, red spider lilies bloom, and the red of the flowers sets off the red of the goldfish and the tanks.

Goldfish Folding Screen Room (金魚屏風の間) — Created 2025

A spatial work of screen-shaped tanks standing on a mirrored surface made to resemble a viewing stage. Goldfish swim inside the folding-screen-style tanks, which project Edo-period screen paintings and ukiyo-e by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, and a "landscape of Edo painted by goldfish" spreads through the space.

NEO Oiran (NEO花魁) — Created 2025

The large tank work "Oiran," a signature piece of Art Aquarium, is staged with neon art that expresses beautiful colors through vivid light. It is a new kind of light art that brings an element of contemporary art into the glow.

HANAMAI (花舞HANAMAI) — Created 2024

A spatial work in which the space lined with the "Oiran" tank works is filled with a variety of flowers. Goldfish and flowers appear together in an elegant, colorful space, and the floral staging is by flower artist Shogo Kariyazaki.

What Is Art Aquarium?

Art Aquarium is an immersive entertainment art form that stages tanks of swimming goldfish with light, scent, and sound.

In Art Aquarium, a world where Japanese tradition and cutting-edge art merge, the culture of goldfish appreciation that has continued since the Edo period is expressed as art for the modern age. The sculptural beauty of the tank works, the spatial staging, and goldfish with all kinds of beauty together create a fantastical space.

Since its debut in Tokyo in 2007, Art Aquarium has been held as a limited-time event across Japan, and its summer edition has become an established and well-loved fixture in Tokyo. In August 2020, its first permanent museum opened in Nihonbashi, Tokyo (Chuo-ku), and in May 2022 it moved to Ginza, Tokyo (Ginza Mitsukoshi New Building 8F, Chuo-ku), where it is currently open. Since 2007, it has drawn a cumulative 13 million visitors (as of October 2025), as an entertainment-style museum IP.
