Calbee's Kataage Potato, a potato chip brand loved for its firm, crunchy texture, is adding a new flavor to its Takumi series, which pursues indulgent Japanese-style flavors. Kataage Potato Takumi Hokkaido Golden Butter Flavor goes on sale for a limited time at convenience stores nationwide starting October 19, 2026 (Monday).
Background
Kataage Potato is a potato chip developed in the tradition of the kettle-frying method that originated in the United States in the mid-19th century. Thickly sliced potatoes are fried slowly and carefully, resulting in a firm texture and a potato flavor that comes through more with every bite.
The Kataage Potato Takumi series is a slightly more indulgent version of Kataage Potato, made with domestic potatoes and seasonings built around carefully selected Japanese ingredients. Launched in 2013 as a limited-time series sold only at convenience stores, it has been well received by many customers. In March 2022, the series was renewed to better express the distinctive Japanese worldview that Kataage Potato values. By combining domestic potatoes with carefully selected domestic ingredients and adopting kraft-style packaging, it was refreshed as a brand focused on both ingredients and appearance.
Kataage Potato Takumi Hokkaido Golden Butter Flavor uses butter made in Hokkaido (※1) to recreate the taste of golden butter melting in the mouth. Butter is a popular flavor in the snack market, and within the Takumi series, a butter flavor recorded the highest first-week sales in units over the past four years (※2). Calbee decided to release a new product out of a wish to let fans enjoy a carefully crafted butter flavor in the Takumi series once again. The chips offer the umami of Hokkaido-made butter that spreads the moment they enter the mouth, a crisp saltiness, and a rich butter flavor that builds with every bite. The product is suggested for those who want to spend relaxed time at home during the chilly season.
※1 The butter used in this product is 100% made in Hokkaido.
※2 Based on Intage SRI+ data, units sold per store, from August 2021.
