CIBONE CASE in Ginza will host CASE:81 – Carpenter's WorkShop 2026, a solo exhibition by woodwork artist Shigehiro Kadena, from April 4 (Saturday) to April 19 (Sunday), 2026.
This marks the eighth time Kadena has exhibited at CIBONE CASE since the store's opening in 2017. His works are known for their soft, gently curved forms — entirely free of nails or adhesives. Instead, magnets embedded within the wooden pieces hold everything together, allowing different silhouettes to emerge depending on how the parts are combined. Balancing carefully under gravity, the structures create an unusual sense of tension, as though the pieces are floating in midair.

Each piece is hand-carved from hardwoods such as walnut, maple, and cherry, drawing out the natural color, grain, and texture of the wood. The organic forms — which preserve the traces of carving — combined with magnetic joinery give rise to sculptures that feel quietly balanced yet structurally daring.

Since his first show at CIBONE CASE, Kadena's exhibitions have evolved through themes including "non structure," "Floating Arcs in the air," "mother," "eden," and "RAW POWER." What began as a structural inquiry has gradually shifted toward a deeper celebration of the material itself — wood's warmth, its grain, and the invisible force of magnetism that brings each composition to life.
About the Artist
Shigehiro Kadena was born in Okinawa in 1978. After working as an assistant at a wood carving school, he began exhibiting at open-air markets before launching a full career as an artist. He held his first solo exhibition in 2012, and has since been based in Tokyo, focusing primarily on solo shows. He creates three-dimensional works by embedding magnets into hand-carved wooden components, combining traditional woodcraft with the invisible forces of nature.
