A Humboldt penguin chick was born at DMM Kariyushi Aquarium in Tomigusuku City, Okinawa Prefecture on January 5, 2026. The chick is now over two weeks old and growing healthily through artificial rearing.
The penguin chick, named "Ichigo" (strawberry), was born to father "Arata" (9 years old) and mother "Akari" (9 years old) at DMM Kariyushi Aquarium. After birth, signs of maternal abandonment were observed, so the aquarium staff took over as surrogate parents and began "artificial rearing" in a brooding box.
The chick weighed just 77g at birth, but thanks to feeding six times every two hours from days 1-7, and five times every three hours from day 8 onward, it has grown steadily. At 15 days old, the chick now weighs 212g.
Although Ichigo has been raised by aquarium staff from an early age, the aquarium plans to eventually have the penguin participate in interactive experiences and shows, depending on its growth and environmental adaptation.
Since the chick is currently being raised in the back area by staff, visitors will need to wait a little longer before they can see Ichigo. The aquarium asks for your warm support as the chick continues to grow.
