Sold Out Last Year, the Zero-Energy Cooling "estaa REIKYAKU Parasol" Is Back for 2026

The estaa REIKYAKU Parasol — a sun-and-rain umbrella developed through a collaboration between Moonbat Co., Ltd. and RadiCool Japan Co., Ltd. — is on sale again for 2026. The series sold out faster than anticipated last year and is back to meet continued demand for effective heat protection during Japan's increasingly intense summers.

Background: Why Traditional Parasols Fall Short

In recent summers, the rise in perceived temperature has been driven not just by direct sunlight, but by heat radiating up from the ground and trapped in the surrounding air. According to Japan Meteorological Agency data, average temperatures in Japan remained at elevated levels throughout 2025, making extreme heat the new normal. With another harsh summer expected in 2026, early preparation has become more important than ever.

Conventional parasols are designed primarily to block direct sunlight, but the fabric itself absorbs solar energy and radiates heat inward, increasing the temperature beneath the canopy. In today's harsh outdoor conditions, simply blocking the sun is no longer enough.

What Is RadiCool?

The REIKYAKU Parasol uses the "RadiCool T-Series" radiative cooling fabric developed by RadiCool Japan. Radiative cooling works by efficiently emitting absorbed heat outward without using any external energy. The fabric combines high solar reflectivity with thermal emission properties, concentrating heat release into the atmospheric window (8–13 μm band) to allow heat exchange with the atmosphere even during the day. This suppresses heat buildup on the surface of the fabric.

Key Features

1. Up to 34°C Temperature Difference

In a shading heat evaluation test using an artificial solar irradiation lamp, the REIKYAKU Parasol recorded a maximum temperature difference of 34°C compared with untreated fabric. It also achieved an S65+ rating — the highest category — with a shading index of 65% or above.

In thermography testing, differences of −11.9°C at the top of the head and −3.2°C at the right shoulder were observed, visually confirming that the parasol effectively suppresses heat from the head down to the shoulders even in strong outdoor sunlight.

2. Full UV Protection — 100% Shading and UPF50+

The multi-layer structure — combining the outer RadiCool layer with a high-density UV-blocking coating — physically blocks light and UV rays.

  • 100% shading rate and UV-cut rate (UPF50+)
  • All-weather use: High water repellency means the parasol also handles sudden rain

Testing methods: heat shielding: JIS L1951 / shading rate: JIS L1055 Method A / UV-cut rate and UPF value: JIS L1925. Figures represent measurements taken on the fabric alone and do not reflect overall parasol performance.

3. Wind-Resistant Construction (54cm and 60cm Models Only)

The 54cm and 60cm models have passed wind resistance testing at 15 m/s — wind speeds strong enough to make walking difficult — providing reassurance during sudden weather changes.

Lineup

All models are available in white (with white or grey piping), made from 100% polyester with a RadiCool surface coating.

Specifications common to all models: 100% shading, 100% UV-cut (UPF50+), 65% heat shielding, water repellent finish.
