Geidai Art Plaza 'Made in Art' Exhibition Returns for Third Year in Ueno

Geidai Art Plaza, a gallery operated through a collaboration between Shogakukan and Tokyo University of the Arts in Ueno, Taito Ward, will host its annual exhibition "Made in Art" from December 6, 2025. The exhibition focuses on providing visitors with the opportunity to experience the joy of purchasing and owning art for the first time.

Beyond Viewing: Experiencing Art Ownership

The gallery, located within the Tokyo University of the Arts (Geidai) campus in Ueno, attracts many visitors who combine their visit with trips to nearby museums such as the Tokyo National Museum, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, and the Geidai Museum. While many visitors show interest in art, few have experience purchasing contemporary artworks by living artists.

The "Made in Art" exhibition, now in its third year since its debut in 2023, addresses this gap by introducing the concept "Buy Your First Art!" The exhibition aims to help more people discover the joy of purchasing and displaying art in their daily lives, featuring both two-dimensional and three-dimensional works available for purchase.

About Geidai Art Plaza

Geidai Art Plaza is a gallery that exhibits and sells works by faculty, students, and alumni of Tokyo University of the Arts, an institution known for producing numerous top artists. Operating as a collaboration between Shogakukan and Geidai since 2018, it serves as one of the few places on the Ueno campus where the general public can freely enter and view art throughout the year.

The gallery hosts themed exhibitions every one to two months, with 10 to 50 artists participating in each show. The exhibitions feature works created using diverse techniques and approaches including oil painting, Japanese painting, sculpture, crafts, and design - reflecting the university's comprehensive artistic education.

Drawing T-shirts display

The gallery includes a permanent section called "LIFE WITH ART" featuring artworks that integrate into daily life, such as pottery and accessories. It also offers unique "Drawing T-shirts (Doro-T)" - one-of-a-kind shirts directly drawn on by Geidai artists.

Admission to Geidai Art Plaza is free, and photography and social media sharing are generally welcome. The venue aims to be a place where anyone, not just art enthusiasts, can casually engage with art.

Official online shop 'Utsuwa to T-shirt no Mise'

In September 2024, the gallery also launched an official online shop called "Utsuwa to T-shirt no Mise" (Pottery and T-shirt Shop), where visitors can purchase one-of-a-kind pottery, cutlery, teapots, and tea bowls made by Geidai artists, as well as various original merchandise.
