Halal Mughal Opens in Kyoto's Shijo Karasuma — After Serving 180,000 Visitors at Expo 2025

Halal Mughal, operated by S.A. Group Co., Ltd. (Osaka, Nishi-ku; Representative Director: Alain Nazar Iqbal), is opening a new location at SUINA Muromachi, a commercial facility in Kyoto's Shijo Karasuma area, on July 1, 2026.

At Expo 2025 Osaka, the company served over 52,000 portions of its signature chicken biryani and more than 30,000 portions of Pakistani mango sweets in just two months — remarkable sales figures for individual menu items. Over the six-month run of the Expo, the restaurant welcomed approximately 180,000 customers, providing meals to visitors from a wide range of cultural and religious backgrounds.

The Kyoto opening marks a new step in taking the "food barrier-free" philosophy cultivated at the Expo from a one-time initiative into everyday life in Kyoto.

Why Shijo Karasuma in Kyoto

The Shijo Karasuma area is one of Kyoto's premier business districts and also serves as a gateway for both domestic and international tourists. In recent years, growing numbers of inbound visitors have driven demand for restaurants accommodating diverse food cultures and religious dietary needs. Yet options for halal and vegan diners remain limited.

Halal Mughal is addressing this gap with the goal of creating an environment where everyone can enjoy a meal at the same table, and is launching a new food culture from Kyoto.

Bringing Expo Experience to Kyoto

During Expo 2025 Osaka, the restaurant served visitors from around the world, gaining exposure to diverse food cultures and values. The experience of sharing one table across differences in religion, culture, and nationality embodies the concept of "Inclusive Food" that the company embraces.

The Kyoto location will apply those lessons to offer halal and vegan menu items, along with a range of dishes designed to accommodate varied dietary practices.

Halal Wagyu as a New Centerpiece

The new Kyoto store will expand its halal-certified wagyu beef lineup. Among the offerings, halal-certified "Arita Wagyu" is a prized Miyazaki brand beef raised without medication in feed or water. Known for clean, non-greasy fat and umami-rich lean meat, this wagyu could not be fully featured at Expo 2025 due to operational constraints. The Kyoto location will offer it in earnest, introducing the depth of Japanese food culture to international visitors while expanding dining choices for local customers.

Message from the Representative

"We want to take the experience gained at the Expo beyond a single event and spread 'food barrier-free' dining throughout society, starting from Kyoto. We hope to contribute to a world where no one's meal choices are limited by religion, culture, or dietary habits — where everyone can gather around the same table. From Kyoto, an international city, we will lead a new standard in food."
