Wind Chimes and Sunflowers Brighten Osaka Prefectural Flower Cultural Garden This Summer

This summer, the Osaka Prefectural Flower Cultural Garden (大阪府立花の文化園) in Kawachinagano, Osaka, is expanding its "Wind Chime Wall" — the lattice display of wind chimes at the event plaza that proved popular last year — and planting sunflowers at varying heights in the flower-picking garden on the roof of the event hall. Both spots make for great summer photos, giving visitors a chance to capture a memorable shot of the season. (Sunflowers are expected to be at their best from late July to mid-August.)

The event hall is also hosting the garden's popular annual "World Insect Exhibition," which this year includes tortoises among the animals visitors can get close to.

Other highlights include sprinkler water play at the lawn plaza, an "Exciting Quiz Hunt," the rain-friendly "Begonia Exhibition" in the greenhouse, ayu (sweetfish) catching, an insect specimen class and creature observation session led by Professor Hirai of Osaka Metropolitan University's graduate school, and a "Summer Kids Workshop" series in the first-floor training room of the Center Building — about 20 booths in total, well suited to summer homework and independent study projects, with some booths available on weekdays this year. The event plaza's HANARE space debuts a new "Carnivorous Plant Laboratory," and the garden is also holding its first-ever plant-based fabric pounding (tataki-zome) workshop.

The on-site restaurant and cafe are rolling out summer menus, and the shop is holding sales as well.
