Spring Roses at Their Peak at Osaka Prefectural Flower Cultural Garden

Spring roses are now at their peak at the Osaka Prefectural Flower Cultural Garden (大阪府立花の文化園) in Kawachinagano, Osaka. The garden's rose collection features all prize-winning varieties from the World Federation of Rose Societies Hall of Fame. Arranged in a symmetrical sunken formal garden design, the entire rose garden can be viewed at a glance from the terrace at the entrance. Notable areas include sections dedicated to "blue roses" and "roses bred in Japan." The peak season is typically from mid-May to mid-June, during which approximately 500 varieties and 1,500 plants of roses are in full bloom.

Fragrant Roses

The rose garden features a wide range, from fragrant old roses to elegant modern roses, with around 150 varieties and 300 plants of strongly fragrant roses. Roses with a particularly strong scent are marked with a "Fragrant Rose" label in the garden.

The ideal time to enjoy the fragrance is early morning, before the roses have been exposed to much sunlight and while the blooms are not yet fully open. The scents change throughout the day depending on sunlight, temperature, and humidity — reportedly offering up to 12 different scents in a single morning.

Strongly Fragrant Varieties

'Maiden's Blush' – Damask fragrance

'Graham Thomas' – Tea fragrance

'Margaret Merril' – Damask fragrance

'Papa Meilland' – Damask Modern fragrance

Other representative strongly fragrant varieties include:

  • 'Kaoruno' (薫乃): Damask + Tea
  • 'Ophelia': Ophelia fragrance (Damask + Tea)
  • 'Chapeau de Napoleon': Damask fragrance
  • 'Masako' / 'Eglantyne': Delicate old rose fragrance
