HOSHINOYA Okinawa Introduces Summer 2026 Experiences Rooted in Ryukyu Tradition

HOSHINOYA Okinawa, a coastal resort in Yomitan Village on Okinawa's main island, announces a series of summer programs running from May 15, 2026. Drawing on the Ryukyu calendar and local traditions, the programs offer guests a chance to paddle traditional wooden boats, witness the energy of Eisa performances, relax poolside under the stars, and taste seasonal confections tied to Okinawan customs. Unlike the sweltering summer heat common on the mainland, Okinawa's summers see comparatively few extreme heat days, making the season particularly suited for outdoor activities and unhurried evenings by the sea.

The resort's infinity pool, where the horizon blurs the line between sea and sky, takes on a different character after dark. Once the sun sets, underwater lights illuminate the water and the sound of waves fills the poolside, creating a calm and immersive atmosphere. Three cocktail menus are offered to match the progression of the evening: an aperitif at sunset, a dessert cocktail under the stars, and a late-night pour of Okinawan awamori as the night deepens.

Period: May 15 – August 31, 2026
Hours: Drinks served 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM (last order); pool available 24 hours
Price: Cocktails from ¥1,500 (tax included)
Reservation: Not required
Note: Program contents may change due to weather. Ingredients and menus are subject to change based on availability.

Yukkanuhii: A Traditional Ceremony for Safe Voyages and Healthy Children

Paddling a traditional Sabani boat along the Okinawan coast

Choosing a Hariko motif and painting it by hand

On the 4th day of the 5th month of the Ryukyuan lunar calendar, Okinawa observes Yukkanuhii — a day for praying to the sea deity for safe voyages, marked historically by Sabani boat races, as well as toy markets celebrating the healthy growth of children. To share in the spirit of this tradition, HOSHINOYA Okinawa hosts the "Paikaji Sabani" experience directly on the natural beach in front of the guestrooms. Guided by seasoned local fishermen, guests board a traditional wooden Sabani and row out over coral reefs to the rhythm of the Haari bell. Inside the property, a Hariko (papier-mâché) painting session echoes the festive toy stalls of the past.

Period:

  • Paikaji Sabani: May 15 – September 30, 2026
  • Hariko painting: May 15 – June 30, 2026

Hours:

  • Paikaji Sabani: 45-minute sessions departing between 7:15 AM and 11:00 AM
  • Hariko painting: 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM

Price:

  • Paikaji Sabani: ¥8,000 per person (tax and service charge included)
  • Hariko painting: ¥3,000 per person (tax and service charge included)

Reservation: Required
Note: Sessions may be canceled in the event of poor weather.

Michijunee: Okinawa's Summer Eisa Procession Through the Gardens

Performers carry the Eisa procession through the resort gardens

Eisa is a traditional Okinawan dance performed during the old Bon festival (Okinawan Obon, held on the 13th to 15th of the 7th lunar month) to guide ancestral spirits on their way. On the final night, performers take the dance into the streets in a procession known as Michijunee, filling the neighborhood with the resonant beat of taiko drums — a sound synonymous with the Okinawan summer. During the program period, HOSHINOYA Okinawa hosts a Michijunee performance in its lush tropical garden. Guests can watch from the balcony of their guestroom or head down to the garden to feel the energy and heat of the performance at close range.

Period: August 1 – 29, 2026
Hours: 6:30 PM to 7:00 PM
Price: Free
Reservation: Required
Note: Held on Wednesdays and Saturdays during the period. May be canceled or modified due to weather.

Sanji-cha Lounge: Afternoon Tea in the Okinawan Tradition

An original Jiimaami Zenzai featuring the nutty richness of peanuts

In Okinawa, "Sanji-cha" — literally "three o'clock tea" — refers to a long-standing local custom of gathering in the afternoon to share sweets and conversation. HOSHINOYA Okinawa hosts a seasonal Sanji-cha Lounge offering traditional sweets tied to each festive period. During the Yukkanuhii season, guests are served "Popo" — a thin, black sugar crepe-like treat traditionally enjoyed by families to celebrate children's healthy growth. For the Obon season, the lounge offers an original "Jiimaami Zenzai": sweet kintime beans simmered in black sugar syrup, enriched with the deep flavor of jiimaami (the Okinawan word for peanuts).

Period:

  • Popo: May 15 – June 30, 2026
  • Jiimaami Zenzai: August 1 – 29, 2026

Hours: 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Price: Free
Reservation: Not required
Note: Contents may change depending on ingredient availability.
