HOSHINOYA, known for offering immersive stays built around a distinctive theme at each of its properties, brings its coastal Okinawa retreat, HOSHINOYA Okinawa, into a new season starting September 21, 2026, with a program inviting guests to savor the beauty of Ryukyu culture through traditional performing arts and lunar-calendar customs, paired with the freshest flavors of autumn. During the Ryukyu Kingdom's age of maritime trade, the kingdom absorbed influences from across Asia and shaped a hospitality all its own. Elegant performing arts once staged to welcome sappushi, the envoys sent from China, and customs tied to the lunar calendar are still part of Okinawan life today. As the refreshing miinishi — Okinawa's word for the wind that shifts from summer's southerly breeze to a cooler northerly one as the season turns — begins to blow, guests can spend autumn evenings poolside to the sound of the sanshin, alongside auspicious sweets and awamori. An afternoon tea served on yachimun, traditional Okinawan pottery, showcases the season's flavors as well. It's a stay that connects guests with history and culture while indulging in the richness of an Okinawan autumn.
An Evening Steeped in Okinawa's Traditional Culture

A pleasant breeze passes through the poolside, offering a special seat immersed in the sound of the sanshin and traditional performing arts. Guests can watch elegant dances once performed to welcome honored guests, while enjoying fuchagi, a traditional mochi confection rolled in red beans and served on the 15th night of the eighth lunar month with prayers for the family's health, alongside chikuzaki, a cup of awamori infused with chrysanthemum leaves once served around the Chōyō no Sekku, or Chrysanthemum Festival, in the belief that the flower's fragrance wards off evil. Through these two customs rooted in the lunar calendar, guests can spend a cool evening where Okinawa's long-cherished traditions echo with the mood of autumn.

An Autumn Night Lulled to Sleep by Healing Scents

Since ancient times, the Chōyō no Sekku has also been known as the Chrysanthemum Festival, and in Okinawa the flower's fragrance has long been believed to ward off evil and bring long life. Inspired by kikumakura, chrysanthemum-filled pillows once made to encourage restful sleep and longevity, guests create an original sachet filled with chrysanthemum petals along with island fragrances such as gettou (shell ginger) and shikuwasa, choosing their own preferred scent to bring back to their room. It's a soothing stay that connects guests with the traditional wisdom of a culture that lives alongside nature, drifting into a peaceful sleep.

An Ocean-View Seat for Admiring Okinawan Craftsmanship

Banta Cafe by Hoshino Resorts, adjacent to HOSHINOYA Okinawa, hosts "Umibe no Yachimun Ichi" (Seaside Yachimun Market), an event introducing yachimun, Okinawa's traditional pottery, timed to the season of craft. This year, the cafe adds a new yachimun afternoon tea, using a yushibin — a vessel once used to carry awamori at celebratory banquets — as a stand-in for a teapot. An assortment of large and small dishes served on yachimun ware is filled with savory bites and sweets featuring Okinawan ingredients such as purple sweet potato and shikuwasa. A private, ocean-view terrace with sweeping views is reserved exclusively for the occasion, letting guests enjoy the beauty of Okinawa's handcrafted traditions and autumn flavors in a private setting cooled by the sea breeze.
